JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Bioinformatician & Head of Clinical Genomics Research is a senior scientific and technical leader responsible for the strategic direction, execution, and advancement of clinical genomics research within the Center for Translational Science. This role combines deep expertise in computational biology and bioinformatics with organizational leadership and scientific stewardship of clinical genomics initiatives.
As Head of Clinical Genomics Research, this individual defines analytical strategy, establishes standards and best practices, and ensures that genomics analyses are scientifically rigorous, reproducible, and aligned with translational and clinical objectives. The role operates with a high degree of autonomy, partners closely with principal investigators, clinicians, and cross-functional stakeholders, and represents the bioinformatics function in institutional and external scientific collaborations.
In addition to hands-on technical contributions, this role provides technical and scientific leadership, mentors bioinformatics staff, contributes to publications and grant funding, and guides the evolution of genomics platforms and methodologies supporting clinical and translational research
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Clinical Genomics Research Leadership:
Serve as Head of Clinical Genomics Research, providing scientific leadership and strategic oversight for genomics analyses supporting translational and clinical studies. Define and implement analytical standards, best practices, and governance for clinical genomics workflows, data quality, and reproducibility. Partner with principal investigators, clinicians, and research leadership to shape genomics strategy and prioritize initiatives aligned with organizational goals. Ensure analytical approaches meet scientific, translational, and regulatory expectations as applicable. - Bioinformatics & Data Analysis:
Lead complex analyses across genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and related biomedical domains, translating high-dimensional data into actionable biological and clinical insights. Design, implement, and maintain reproducible analysis pipelines for routine and large-scale data processing. Perform advanced statistical analyses and method selection to support hypothesis-driven and exploratory research. - Pipeline, Workflow & Platform Development:
Develop, optimize, and maintain scalable bioinformatics workflows using modern workflow frameworks and high-performance computing or cloud environments. Integrate heterogeneous data sources, including sequencing outputs, experimental metadata, and external biomedical databases. Build user-facing tools, visualizations, and reports to support interpretation by scientific and clinical stakeholders. - Software Engineering & Prototyping:
Design and develop modular, reusable, and well-documented software components using industry-standard programming languages and development practices. Prototype novel computational tools and analytical approaches, transitioning successful prototypes into production-quality solutions. Apply best practices in version control, testing, validation, documentation, and code review. - Method & Algorithm Development:
Evaluate, adapt, and develop computational algorithms and statistical models tailored to complex biomedical and clinical genomics data. Stay current with emerging bioinformatics methodologies and recommend appropriate approaches based on scientific and operational needs. Benchmark tools and methods to ensure robustness, scalability, and scientific validity. - Scientific Collaboration & Communication:
Serve as a senior bioinformatics partner to principal investigators, researchers, and collaborators across multiple projects. Communicate complex analytical concepts and results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Contribute to manuscripts, grant applications, research proposals, and internal scientific reviews. Present findings at internal meetings, external conferences, and scientific forums. - Leadership & Mentorship:
Mentor junior bioinformaticians, analysts, and trainees, providing technical guidance and career development support. Help define and maintain reusable resources, shared infrastructure, and best practices for the bioinformatics function. Manage multiple concurrent projects, balancing scientific priorities, timelines, and stakeholder expectations. Collaborate with IT and infrastructure teams to align computational strategies with organizational goals - Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Doctorate PHD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Bioengineering, or related quantitative discipline. Required
EXPERIENCE
- 10 years of experience in academic, biotech, pharmaceutical, or applied biomedical research environments. Required
- Extensive hands-on experience analyzing biomedical data such as sequencing, gene expression, genotyping, proteomics, or related modalities. Required
- Strong proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Perl, C/C++, Java) and database technologies. Required
- Demonstrated experience with Linux/UNIX/macOS environments, command-line tools, shell scripting, and high-performance or cloud-based computing. Required
- Solid grounding in statistics, scientific computing, and data visualization. Required
- Proven application of software engineering best practices, including version control, testing, documentation, and reproducibility. Required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Required
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical efforts and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. Required
- Prior experience mentoring or leading junior scientific staff. Required
- Experience working in translational, clinical, or regulated research environments. Preferred
- Familiarity with workflow management systems, containerization, and cloud computing platforms. Preferred
- Track record of scientific publications, bioinformatics tool development, or widely used analytical resources. Preferred
