| Essential Job Duties |
Join NC State's Environmental Health & Safety team and play a vital role in creating a safe, innovative, and compliant campus environment. In this position, you'll manage key Occupational Safety programs while partnering closely with the Occupational Safety Manager to reduce risk across a wide range of areas, including confined spaces, asbestos and lead safety, machine guarding, crane and hoist operations, electrical safety, ergonomics,
OSHA recordkeeping, and personal protective equipment (
PPE).

What You'll Do
Drive Safety Excellence
- Lead and support complex components of the university's Occupational Safety Program with a high level of independence.
- Evaluate program effectiveness, identify improvement opportunities, and implement solutions that strengthen safety outcomes.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to campus departments, offering expert guidance and practical, collaborative solutions.
- Contribute to the development of innovative EH&S compliance programs-especially in research environments that push beyond traditional regulatory frameworks.
Manage and Grow Safety Programs
- Develop and oversee a varied portfolio of programs, including ergonomics, electrical safety, fall protection, PPE, confined spaces, and safety in shops, kitchens, and field environments.
- Partner with vendors and campus stakeholders to deliver effective, cost-efficient ergonomic and safety solutions.
- Act as the EH&S liaison to departmental safety committees, helping foster a strong, proactive safety culture.
- Review Facilities Modification requests to ensure safety is embedded in campus development projects.
- Participate in inspections and emergency response efforts that support campus-wide safety.
Educate and Empower
- Design and deliver engaging, high-impact safety training on a variety of complex topics.
- Ensure all training materials-internal and vendor-provided-are accurate, compliant, and relevant.
- Equip employees with the knowledge and tools they need to work safely and confidently.
Ensure Compliance & Advance Safety Standards
- Stay current with evolving occupational safety regulations and proactively update programs to maintain compliance.
- Conduct comprehensive inspections across varied environments such as machine shops, pilot plants, agricultural areas, and facilities operations.
- Partner with departments to resolve safety concerns and navigate regulatory interactions, including OSHA inspections.
- Provide guidance on citation response, abatement strategies, and penalty mitigation.
- Identify emerging risks and develop forward-thinking solutions, particularly in areas where regulations are still evolving.
- Support campus safety initiatives as a member of the spill response team.
Communicate with Impact
- Translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, practical guidance for employees.
- Share inspection results, incident insights, and program updates through multiple channels, including in-person engagement and digital content.
- Drive awareness, understanding, and continuous improvement in campus safety practices.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

| Other Required Qualifications |
- Requires a detailed knowledge and experience base of enforcing or managing a wide range of occupational safety programs.
- Based on varied experience and training this person must be capable of contributing to solutions to safety concerns associated with new technologies, without reliance on established practices.
- Capable of oversight of multiple safety programs covering a large and complex university environment, including lab, facility, machine & woodworking shops, and pilot plan operations.
- Understands and applies regulatory and university requirements for safe work for a variety of subjects and applications.
- Demonstrated capability to assess weaknesses in solutions and approaches and skills associated with the to assigned hazard control programs, resulting in continuous improvement to these programs.
- Ability to be able to both critique and clearly communicate safety concerns regarding a wide range of activities including but not limit to, electrical safety maintenance work practices, forklift and aerial lift operation, and ergonomics.
- Knowledgeable about complex safety topics and able to deliver effective training covering a variety of issues including arc flash awareness, electrical PPE, office ergonomics, use of personal fall protection equipment, and electrical safety for mechanical trades.
- Maintains accreditation as an office ergonomics specialist through coursework and practice. Requires a knowledge of OSHA regulatory development processes and communication procedures in order to track early development efforts.
- Experience in development of solutions to compliance problems through personal experience and from interaction with other safety professionals is necessary to enable this person to develop solutions which are both effective and user friendly to administer for our university customer base (efficient solutions).
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of occupational safety regulations above key responsibility is necessary due to the scope, breadth, and complexity of University operations and processes.
- Requires an experience level and ability to craft solutions to safety concerns associated with new technology, where a solution "roadmap" may not exist.
- This reality of safety work in a cutting edge research environment requires a well developed set of cost/benefit assessment skills, based on experience.
- Due to the scope of the programs managed by this position, and scope and frequency of customer interactions, this position requires well developed written and oral communication skills to supplement technical ability.
- Ability to assimilate information quickly and provide insightful feedback to co-workers and customers.
- Ability to express concepts clearly to peers and manager. Provides critical input while maintaining a courteous demeanor in keeping with the goals of the EH&S Department.
- Participates in safety inspection process, providing leadership for assigned occupational safety programs.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Prefer mixed experience including regulatory, industry, and lab spanning at least 5 years involving a variety of situations/challenges.
CSP, asbestos/lead certification preferred but not required.
