About This Role

Kansas State University's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is seeking an Instructor/Teaching Assistant Professor of Acting/Directing with an emphasis in Musical Theatre. The ideal candidate must be proficient in teaching at all levels, guided by principles of team teaching and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Directing:Direct 1 or 2 productions a year, consisting of a music theatre production and/or chamber opera





  • Teaching:Teach fundamental and/oradvanced theatre courses.





  • Research/Creative Activity:Maintainan active professional profile.





  • Service & Engagement:Participatein departmental activities, production meetings, recruitment efforts, and student mentorship.




About Us

The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is one of the largest and fastest-growing academic units at Kansas State University, serving more than 522 majors, secondary majors, minors, and graduate students, with over 7,000 individual student enrollments annually. The School presents more than 300 concerts, recitals, plays, and dance productions each year, supported by 72 faculty and staff.

The School is an All-Steinway School and holds professional accreditation from NASM, NAST, and NADTA. Established in 2012 through the merger of long-standing music, theatre, and dance units, the School builds on more than a century of excellence in the performing arts at Kansas State University.


Worksite Description

This position is On-site.

All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. K-State is unable to provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.


What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Instructor: Master's degree in Theatre, Music, Musical Theatre, or related field
  • Teaching Assistant Professor: Terminal degree in Theatre, Music or Musical Theatre
  • Demonstrated expertise in Musical Theatre performance and direction with a record of professional experience in the field of musical theatre and theatre.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching acting, directing, or courses related to musical theatre at the collegiate level.
  • Principles of Community: A strong commitment to K-State's principles of community in theatre education and production.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.


The degree requirement is necessary for accreditation purposes and to ensure candidates possess the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities that can only be attained through a formal educational program at this level.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience directing operas or teaching opera/musical theatre workshops.
  • Familiarity with practices of intimacy direction and consent training.
  • Professional Engagement: Active participation in professional organizations, conferences, and networks related to performing and directing.
  • Interest and experience in other acting/directing areas such as Choreography, Improvisation, and Stage Movement. Professionally affiliated in such organizations as Actors' Equity Association (AEA), The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society(SDC), or others.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing inclusive excellence through research, teaching, and creative practice.
