Description

This position provides full-time charge nurse duties to the Neuroscience Institute. The primary responsibility of the position is to supervise, manage and direct nursing care provided within the clinic and assist physicians, residents and medical students in the performance of patient care activities for the Neuroscience Institute.

Examples of Duties

Patient Care 85%

A. Renders expert nursing care, which focuses on a highly specialized segment of patients.
B. Participates with department physicians and staff in primary care of outpatients.
C. Prepares patients for physician's examinations, i.e. vital signs, collection of specimens, and other functions as directed by the physician.
D. Performs clinic laboratory testing and procedural testing according to clinic protocols. Reports findings to physician and records in patient medical record.
E. Prepares patients for procedures (i.e. starting IV fluids, Botox injections, lumbar punctures, EKG's, etc.).
F. Assists with procedures. Sets up and/or completes procedures as necessary under the direction of the MD and/or APN.
G. Develops and implements patient plan of care with MD and/or APN.
H. Coordinates delivery of patient plan of care.
I. Administers medications by all routes.
J. Performs patient teaching and maintains supply of teaching materials.
K. Schedules appointments for future patient visits, appointments with other physicians and ancillary services.
L. Monitors phone calls and responds to patient calls as directed.
M. Checks patient charts before appointments and obtains missing information.
N. Makes triage judgements and performs clinical duties requiring varying nursing expertise to ensure proper daily operation for the SIU NSI clinics are required or directed.
0. Under direction of physician or APN, orders medication refills. Documents actions in patients' medical record.
P. Works with other health care team members in the multidisciplinary clinics. Assists all physicians, residents and nurse practitioners.
Q. Identifies needs for specialized nursing skills and informs proper sources.
R. Maintains clean, well-equipped exam rooms.
S. Monitors supplies, forms, etc., laundry, stocks meds and medical supplies in clinic and informs proper staff of need to reorder as needed.
T. Routinely check sample drugs, emergency drugs and equipment, oxygen tanks, stock drugs for expiration dates and replaces as needed.
U. Assists LPN's as needed.
V. Performs other duties as assigned.
Administrative 15%
A. Provides direct supervision for clinic team members. Supervise nursing care delivery ensuring that care delivered benefits the patient and meets the individual physician/APN's need and SIU Medicine and Department guidelines on quality assurance.
B. Coordinate orientation and training for all new personnel in the clinic space and provide training to staff regarding new/revised policies and procedures; keep current on all patient care duties/responsibilities.
C. Performs periodic employee performance evaluations of RN's, LPN's and MA's with input from faculty, staff and administration. Monitor vacation, overtime, and compensatory time off of nursing staff. Participates in the disciplinary action process for staff when needed according to SIU Medicine policies.

D. Interviews and hires personnel to fill vacancies within the department.
E. Meet regularly with division directors or department administrators to solve operational and clinic problems, to monitor progress toward identified goals and to share other relevant information.
F. Initiates and participates in development of policies, protocols, and procedures as necessary in order to ensure that the outpatient department's practice follows practice-wide guidelines.
G. Serve as a liaison to the SIU Risk and Safety team for the needs of the NSI.
H. Monitor clinic schedules to provide maximum availability of clinic space and staff to meet physician demand in department clinics.
I. Initiates and participates in development of patient and family education and supervise nursing personnel who administer the education, ensuring that it is appropriate for the specific patient and it is in accordance with the physician expectations.
J. Assists the Health Care Administrator with mediating issues and problems between physicians and ancillary personnel with nursing staff.
K. Implements ASHA, CILA, and ADA regulations in the NSI Clinic.
L. Contribute to the development and implement of a Quality Assurance Program for the nursing staff and participate in patient care audits.
M. Participate in nursing in-services to promote the development of other nursing staff.
N. Orient residents and students with the operation of the NSI Clinic and the specific preferences of the physician to whom they are assigned.
0. Schedules and participates in scheduled meetings.
P. Contributes own talent or volunteer other talented individuals to participate in special projects and/or SIU job fairs.
Q. With the assistance of administration, develop measurable annual goals for the position.
R. Hold membership in a professional nursing organization and attend relevant continuing education programs.
S. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Credentials to be Verified by Placement Officer

  1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
  2. Three years of work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse or 2 years work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse with 1 year of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's)

Condition of Employment
