Patient Access Specialist - Medical Imaging Location: Onsite \| Downtown Chicago (Near North Side) Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Pay Rate: $19.00-$22.00 per hour Contract: Initial 30-60 days with potential extension and/or temp-to-hire About the Opportunity This is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door at a highly respected pediatric healthcare organization and join a Medical Imaging team that rarely has openings. The department is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care to children and their families, and is seeking additional support to help manage a high call volume and work backlog. Position Summary As a Patient Access Specialist, you will provide exceptional, customer-focused service by handling a high volume of inbound and outbound calls related to pediatric medical imaging. You will be responsible for accurate scheduling, registration, and documentation within the Epic EMR, while serving as a key liaison between patient families, providers, nurses, and internal departments. This role supports multiple imaging modalities, including: * X-Ray * Ultrasound * MRI * CT (Pediatric) * Nuclear Medicine You can expect to handle approximately 100+ calls per day, with average calls lasting around five minutes, though some imaging appointments require more in-depth coordination. Key Responsibilities * Answer and manage high-volume inbound and outbound phone calls with professionalism and empathy * Schedule new and follow-up imaging appointments following modality-specific guidelines * Accurately collect and verify patient demographics, insurance eligibility, referrals, and authorizations * Perform registration activities and update patient information in Epic * Enter written and faxed provider orders into patient charts with a high level of accuracy * Transcribe referrals and submit them for clinical triage per departmental guidelines * Collect copays, outstanding balances, and self-pay amounts when applicable * Communicate next steps and appointment details clearly to families * Collaborate with internal teams, including clinicians, nurses, and providers * Maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality at all times * Meet individual and departmental performance metrics and quality standards Qualifications Required: * High School Diploma or GED * Strong knowledge of medical terminology * Healthcare scheduling experience (radiology/imaging strongly preferred) * Experience working in a healthcare call center or high-volume phone environment * Comfortable interacting with patients, parents, clinicians, and internal partners * Strong attention to detail and accuracy * Ability to multitask, think critically, and work efficiently in a fast-paced setting Preferred: * Epic EMR experience (other EMR systems also accepted) * Experience supporting medical imaging, radiology, or specialty scheduling Why You'll Love This Role * Rare entry point into a well-known pediatric hospital and imaging department * Meaningful work supporting children and their families * Exposure to specialized medical imaging workflows * Potential for extension or conversion to a longer-term role * Collaborative, mission-driven healthcare environment If you're someone who enjoys patient interaction, complex scheduling, and being part of a team committed to exceptional pediatric care, this could be an excellent next step in your healthcare career.
