The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO's Operations department invites applications for a full-time Senior Associate Operations Engineering Engineer to join the team.

The Associate Operations Engineering Engineer will determine system reliability transfer limits, assist management in the review of NYISO controlled and secured facilities in the areas of System Studies, maintenance and testing of Power System Protection systems, and Reporting and Compliance, and develop engineering studies and analysis to assist management to make engineering-based recommendations to internal functions, Market Participant committees and the general public and will participate in NYISO study groups.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Perform analytical engineering system studies in the following: NYISO seasonal operating studies, NERC, NPCC, and Inter-Regional study support and, when requested, provide Transmission Planning support. Examples of studies include: seasonal reliability assessments, thermal, voltage, and transient stability studies, short circuit studies, Inter-Regional transfer analysis and reliability assessments.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of system events and disturbances. Review system events and performance after-the-fact for compliance with NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC Standards, Criteria, and Rules.
  • Maintain a detailed electric power system models for the NYCA, incorporating the most accurate system representation for the neighboring Areas to represent the specific study conditions for thermal, voltage, stability short circuit analysis
  • Conduct reviews of NYISO controlled and secured facilities, standards and practices for installation, maintenance and testing of bulk power protective relay systems.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of computer simulation programs and/or other tools to ensure the safe and reliable operations of the NYISO transmission and generation resources.
  • Prepare and maintain of NYISO technical support documentation
  • Advise and confer with engineers in review meetings to review analysis and develop recommendations and conclusions. Provide technical support to Operations and Planning and Market Monitoring staff.
  • Participate on internal and external committees, project teams and Market Participant working groups.
  • Associate Engineers perform routine engineering studies under the guidance of an Engineer or Senior Engineer. When they attend meetings as a department representative, they transmit information between the committee / attendees and more senior department engineers.



QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is required with preference for coursework in power systems, electrical engineering, power system components (generation and transmission equipment, concepts and principles), mathematical modeling of power system components; Master's Degree (MS) desired.
  • No prior industry related, or professional experience required. Knowledge of industry criteria and practices regarding power system operation and planning helpful; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations to, and respond to questions from, internal and Market Participant working groups, Professional Societies, and the general public.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts including vectors, phasors, Fourier transforms, non-linear partial differential equations, control theory and proofs of theorems.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office (including spreadsheet and database) applications, e-mail and internet programs, and SAS (or similar) statistical analysis software. Proficiency in the use of advanced Power Flow and transient stability applications software (PSS/e or PSLF), or fault current assessment applications software (ASPEN One-Liner, etc.) to perform system studies is required; familiarity with dynamic recording devices and support software, or frequency and spectral (FFT) analysis software is desirable.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to perform routine office tasks. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and public will occur. Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.
