New Hanover County is looking for a service-driven Household Hazardous Waste Program Assistant to join our Recycling & Solid Waste Department. In this role, you will assist with the safe handling, processing, and disposal of hazardous waste while providing valuable service to the community
Responsibilities for this role include:
- Assists in the collection, processing, storage, and preparation of electronic waste and household hazardous waste for shipment.
- Identify and categorize chemicals and other hazardous substances to determine appropriate blending, packaging and storage methods.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the HHW facility and grounds, ensuring all storage areas are secure and organized.
- Addresses inquiries of the general public regarding the operations and services available through the department.
- Safely operates material handling equipment such as forklift and pick up truck to move heavy containers.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meets the scheduling needs as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
The New Hanover County Recycling & Solid Waste Department oversees one of the state's most advanced integrated solid waste disposal systems. We provide residents with multiple options to recycle waste and divert it from landfill disposal, including a permanent Household Hazardous Waste and electronics facility, as well as the weekly mobile collection service, the HazWagon. Residents can bring household hazardous waste, electronics, toxic materials, and unpackaged food waste for the County's composting program free of charge. All materials collected through the permanent facility and HazWagon are recycled, repurposed, neutralized, used for alternative power generation, or disposed of in accordance with state and federal law.

Hours:
This position is part time with benefits, 25 hours per week.
Work schedule will be Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, with occasional Saturday shifts from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm as needed.
Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.
Employment Type: Part time, non-exempt
Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position starts at $17.46 hour, plus a competitive benefits package.
Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience related to the program area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
- The ability to operate a forklift and pick-up truck.
Physical Requirements:
- Standing for most hours in an outdoor work environment with exposure to various types of weather/elements
- Frequent heavy lifting of at least 50 lbs.
- The work is typically performed in an environment where the employee may be exposed to varying temperature and/or weather conditions as well as varying degrees of distractions, conditions and/or chemicals and/or waste which requires the employee to pay attention to one's own safety as well as that of customers and citizens served.

- Valid Driver's License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
