Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. Programmatically, Cornell Cooperative Extension connects the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Human Ecology (CHE) with 55 off-campus Associations, Integrated Pest Management, New York State Sea Grant, Area Specialists, and CCE New York City.

The Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program (CNY DLFC) is a Cornell Cooperative Extension Regional Agriculture Team that serves a large multi-county region in Southwest New York State. The team consists of four specialists who work together with Cornell faculty and extension educators statewide to address the issues that impact the industry. The programs provide educational opportunities and information to producers, processors, and agri-business professionals, arming them with the knowledge to profitably for dairy, field crops, and livestock operations, contributing to the viability of farms and the economic well-being of New York State.

Under the direction of regional specialists (Extension Associates and Extension Support Specialists), provide technical and program support in carrying out research and outreach that will ultimately enhance the profitability and sustainability of the dairy, livestock and field crop industry served by the SWNY New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program (SWNY DLFC).Travel to research plots on commercial farms throughout the region served by the SWNY DLFC to assist in the collection of field data. Assist with recording, entering, and maintaining field data. Monitor traps and scout for insects, diseases, weeds and crop damage in research plots and commercial farms and maintain good records. Work will frequently be performed in commercial fields that have been sprayed with pesticides and will require training in Worker Protection Standards (WPS) to understand the safe field re-entry period and practices. Ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements. Assist in planning and logistical setup for educational meetings, workshops, conferences, and tours throughout the region. Work with adult clientele utilizing material and teaching techniques learned through in-service training. Routinely meet with supervisors to discuss plans and to select appropriate materials and teaching techniques. Assist with data entry, evaluation, and report maintenance of program activities. Update website and social media pages. Assist in the preparation and utilization of training and educational materials. Gather and coordinate educational materials and lesson plans. Assist in recruiting participants and volunteers for programs. And all other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time position at 97.5 % FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State one day a week; an on-site presence in Southwest New York is required four days a week.

What We Need

  • Associate's degree and up to 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent combination.

  • Must be able to meet travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation.

  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver's license and be cleared to drive for university business.

  • Proven ability to work independently in collecting and summarizing data.

  • Competence utilizing current computer technology, i.e., Windows - Excel/Word/PowerPoint

  • Excellent written and oral communication, and excellent organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated skills with social media outreach.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.

  • Excellent customer service skills; must work effectively with clientele.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.

  • Will be expected to work flexible hours, occasional evenings, and weekends as job functions require.

  • Visual concentration, attention to detail, and manual dexterity are required.

  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs.

  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.

  • Associate's degree with coursework in entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, weed science, horticulture, and/or agronomy.

  • Experience supporting research projects, including data collection and summary.

  • Experience working in agriculture, dairy, field crops, and/or cash crops production.
