DESCRIPTION

Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's / school's / college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures.

Under the general supervision of the CAO and in close consultation with the Chair and faculty committees, the Student Affairs Manager is responsible for the overall management and administration of the Chemical Engineering and NanoEngineering undergraduate and graduate (Ph.D. and MA) programs.

Independently administer the Graduate and Undergraduate programs overseeing advising, programming, fiscal administration, recruitment, admissions, and student payroll/personnel. Conduct analysis for the design and implementation of graduate and undergraduate programs including the development of policies and procedures, analysis of student and financial data, design and maintenance of data systems and web pages, and short- and long-range planning. Provide expert interpretation, analysis and implementation of departmental and university broadly defined policies and serve as key advisor to the Department Chair, Program Director, Graduate and Undergraduate Program Directors, faculty committees, and CAO on matters related to Student Affairs. Oversee records management for all department/program students including admission, financial, and academic program records. Serve as the liaison between the department/program and central campus administrative offices and the community. Supervise two professional student affairs staff members providing training, work direction, performance feedback and professional development guidance.

The position utilizes knowledge of university academic policies and procedures in the coordination of Student Affairs advising operations. The position is responsible for long-range planning for student-related issues and making assessments and recommendations concerning issues affecting the Student Affairs area, including short-term and long-term unit and departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Substantial professional experience in a college academic advising environment. Demonstrated skill in counseling and advising techniques, including active listening, interviewing, and special knowledge and abilities required to assist students in academic or personal crisis. Ability to know when to refer a student, using tact and diplomacy and how to act as the student's advocate and liaison with other campus offices and colleges.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Demonstrated skill in organizing and prioritizing workload to meet departmental and campus deadlines.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

  • Interpersonal skills. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent UCSD appropriately to internal and externalconstituents.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Ability to work independently, exercising initiative and sound professional judgment in the performance of responsibilities. Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills. Ability to consistently maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to work with individuals and groups and to perceive and identify their concerns and/or problems, while defining strategies to meet their needs. Skill in problem solving, conflict resolution, suggesting academic alternatives, and decision-making.

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

  • Ability to develop materials and conduct group advising sessions, meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. Experience and skill in facilitating small and large group interactions.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.

  • Skills and knowledge to give work direction to other employees, delegate and set priorities. Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and work under short deadline situations while maintaining composure. Skill in relating information in a training situation.

  • Ability to evaluate academic data and student academic records, making analytical decisions.

  • Strong analytical, inductive and deductive reasoning skills.

  • Experience in higher education and an understanding of the academic process.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,300 - $103,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $49.76

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
