By joining Datavant today, you're stepping onto a driven and highly collaborative team that is passionate about creating transformative change in healthcare.
Role Overview
The VP of Infrastructure & Cloud Engineering owns the architecture, reliability, and operational maturity of Datavant's cloud infrastructure, site reliability engineering, and compute platforms. This role is accountable for everything beneath the application layer: cloud platform engineering, core infrastructure governance, site reliability across all business verticals, virtual desktop environments serving thousands of concurrent clinical users, cloud cost management across a large footprint, and the infrastructure integration playbook for M&A. Today, this domain reflects the complexity of a company that has grown rapidly: multiple cloud providers, dozens of accounts with varying governance maturity, an expanding international footprint, embedded SRE teams across business verticals, and infrastructure that must simultaneously support regulated healthcare workloads and aggressive AI adoption. The cloud platform layer powers hundreds of microservices across Kubernetes and serves as the deployment and observability backbone for the entire technology organization. Core infrastructure, cloud account governance, networking, VDI, and physical infrastructure, requires strong architectural ownership as the environment scales and compliance expectations increase. This is an executive operator role, not advisory. The VP will inherit a strong technical foundation built by experienced engineering leaders and is expected to elevate it into a mature, enterprise-grade infrastructure organization - one with clear standards, measurable reliability, cost discipline, and the capacity to absorb growth and future integrations without breaking. The role has direct authority over cloud platform engineering, SRE, core infrastructure, VDI, and is accountable for platform reliability, infrastructure cost efficiency, M&A integration readiness, and operational maturity across the domain.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Platform Engineering
- Own the architecture and evolution of Datavant's cloud platform layer: Kubernetes (EKS), CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration, developer self-service capabilities, and workload management
- Drive platform convergence across acquisition-inherited environments toward a consistent, well-governed architecture
- Establish platform abstractions that enable product engineering teams to ship faster without creating infrastructure sprawl or compliance risk
- Own the observability strategy, ensuring monitoring, alerting, and tracing are consistent, actionable, and trusted across all environments
- Partner with Security to ensure cloud platform controls satisfy HIPAA, SOC 2, and emerging compliance requirements without creating delivery bottlenecks
Site Reliability Engineering
- Own the SRE function end-to-end: core platform SRE, embedded vertical SRE teams, and the operating model that governs how reliability is delivered across business units
- Define and enforce reliability standards, SLOs, error budgets, capacity planning, and on-call practices across a multi-vertical healthcare platform
- Lead incident management for infrastructure and platform incidents, ensuring rapid triage, clear escalation, effective resolution, and durable postmortems
- Scale the embedded SRE model across Provider, Payer, Life Sciences, and Legal & Insurance verticals with clear ownership boundaries and consistent practices
- Drive reliability improvements that are measurable: reduced MTTR, fewer repeat incidents, and increased deployment confidence
Core Infrastructure & Network Architecture
- Own cloud account governance: account structure, organizational unit design, guardrails, and policy enforcement across AWS, Azure, and any additional cloud environments
- Define and enforce network architecture standards: VPC design, routing, peering, transit gateway topology, DNS, VPN, and hybrid connectivity
- Establish infrastructure-as-code and policy-as-code practices that prevent configuration drift without creating bottlenecks
- Oversee physical office infrastructure and data center operations, including ongoing migration and consolidation efforts
- Partner with Security on cloud security posture, IAM governance, and infrastructure compliance
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure & End-User Compute
- Provide executive ownership for Datavant's VDI platforms serving thousands of concurrent users across regulated healthcare workflows
- Drive architectural modernization, performance optimization, and capacity planning across multiple VDI technology stacks and cloud providers
- Ensure VDI reliability and performance meet the demands of onshore and offshore clinical operations where downtime directly impacts revenue and patient outcomes
- Own vendor management and build-vs-buy decisions for end-user compute platforms
M&A Infrastructure Integration
- Own the infrastructure integration playbook for acquisitions: cloud account onboarding, network connectivity, security baseline enforcement, observability integration, and platform convergence
- Build repeatable integration patterns that reduce the marginal cost and risk of each successive acquisition
- Partner with Security, Enterprise Engineering, and Technology Operations on post-close infrastructure workstreams
- Ensure acquired teams can operate safely and reliably while longer-term platform convergence is executed
International Operations
- Scale infrastructure and SRE capabilities across Datavant's growing international footprint, including established and emerging office locations
- Ensure infrastructure architecture and operational practices support global teams without creating regional silos or inconsistent governance
- Partner with regional leadership to align hiring, on-call coverage, and operational maturity with business needs
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and develop a 50-60+ person organization spanning cloud platform engineering, SRE, core infrastructure, VDI, and FinOps, with a trajectory toward 70-80+
- Assess organizational structure and talent against long-term platform demands, making changes where necessary to ensure the right people are in the right roles
- Build engineering depth and leadership capacity to reduce single-person dependencies and key-person risk
- Establish a culture of architectural ownership, operational discipline, reliability focus, and continuous improvement
- Manage vendor and contractor relationships with clear accountability and transition planning
- Partner with recruiting to attract and retain senior infrastructure and SRE talent in a competitive market, across multiple geographies
Requirements
- 15+ years in technology leadership, with at least 5 years in a VP or senior director role leading infrastructure, cloud engineering, or SRE organizations at scale
- Proven experience architecting and operating multi-cloud infrastructure in complex, high-growth environments - ideally through periods of significant M&A activity
- Deep understanding of cloud platform engineering: Kubernetes, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and developer platform capabilities
- Strong network architecture and cloud governance background, including multi-account management, IAM governance, and infrastructure security in regulated environments
- Track record building and scaling SRE functions, including defining SLO frameworks, incident management practices, and embedded reliability models
- Experience managing cloud spend at scale ($20M+), including cost attribution, optimization programs, and vendor/contract strategy
- Demonstrated ability to consolidate fragmented infrastructure functions - inherited through acquisition or organic growth - into well-governed, scalable operations
- Experience operating in regulated or compliance-heavy industries (healthcare, life sciences, or financial services preferred)
- Proven ability to build and lead large, geographically distributed engineering organizations
- Ability to communicate decisions clearly, align stakeholders, and make definitive architecture calls under ambiguity
