DH RADIOLOGY MAMMOGRAPHY PAV L Job Summary

As one primary component of this job, and under the direction of a radiologist, performs screening and diagnostic mammograms at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs a variety of technical imaging procedures that entail application of ionizing radiation; therefore, prudent judgment, strong technical skills, and a commitment to patient safety are considered requisite professional characteristics for individuals assuming the position as a mammography technologist. Another secondary component of this job involves assisting the radiologist in performing interventional breast procedures and breast ultrasound examinations in order to contribute to a diagnosis.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs screening and diagnostic mammograms following appropriate assessment by clinicians. (50%)
  • Performs breast ultrasound procedures in a timely manner according to physicians' order, established protocols, and/or specific radiologist direction. (5%)
  • Effectively interacts with Denver Health's PACS system through compliance with data entry, image post-processing, image archiving tasks, image quality assurance, and other related user interface activities. (5%)
  • Assists radiologists during interventional procedures, (breast biopsies, needle localizations). Such assistance may include procedures preparation, post-procedural patient care to include, but not limited to, breast compression, retrieval of ice, and delivery of biopsy specimen to laboratory. (5%)
  • Maintains records of examinations and other pertinent information on patients within Epic. (5%)
  • Performs QC/QA processes daily on digital equipment. Phantom image test must be performed weekly. (5%)
  • Assembles order requisition, patient history sheet, and comparison films (when relevant) for radiologists' review within 30 minutes of completion of exam. (5%)
  • Performs duties related to the management of pathology results that include: printing and copying of pathology reports; verifying if patients are scheduled properly; and entering of pathology results into the computer system. Any or all of the following activities may be required each week as directed by supervisor and/or radiologist(s).
    * Print written pathology reports from previous week's patients' biopsies.
    * Refer abnormal results to surgical breast clinic for an appointment.
    * Education patients of their scheduled procedures.
    * Meet with patients to discuss biopsy results.
    * Assist with preparation for breast conference.
    * Update the procedure book with pathology results.
    * Check status of patients waiting for biopsies and document.
    * Notify PCP about patient's status.
    * Check status of patients needing additional views and document.
    * Enter pathology results into Epic.
    * Notify care providers of patient's pathology results.
    * Remind radiologist to addend his/her interpretation by providing the radiologist a copy of the written pathology report.

  • Uses Epic to schedule breast diagnostic studies. (5%)
  • Assists in the maintenance of department inventory by ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized when performing general radiographic examinations. (5%)
  • Maintains a clean and orderly working environment through wiping down examination tables, changing linens, stocking supplies, and washing/disinfecting general radiographic equipment. (5%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required

Work Experience:
  • less than 1 year 1 year of professional work experience in performing breast screening and diagnostic procedures, preferred.

Licenses:
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
  • RTR-RT Radiography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required and
  • RTM-RT Mammography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required or
  • Colorado Provisional Mammography License - Accreditation CDPHE Required and
  • Initial Qualifications Completed - MQSA Mammography Quality Standards Act Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in how to operate digital mammography equipment and related technology.
  • Competency in the performance of screening and diagnostic mammograms.
  • Knowledge of how to address age-specific care needs of patients.
  • Effective interpersonal skill sets that lead to productive communications and collaborations.
  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for screening/diagnostic mammograms as well as interventional breast procedures and breast ultrasound imaging.
  • Ability to exercise prudent judgment in selecting and configuring equipment settings to compensate for patient physiologic variances.
  • Ability to consistently produce quality images related to the breast region.
