Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Behavior Specialist works as member of the behavioral services team alongside a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of quality services based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists BCBA in conducting behavior analytic assessments such as Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), Preference Assessments, and Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) to help create function-based, skill-level appropriate individualized Behavior Support Plans and skill-acquisition goals aimed at increasing functional, social, leisure, communication, and vocational skills; peer interactions; and independence with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
  • Assists BCBA in overseeing the implementation of Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) in order to promote successful, quality programming
  • Conducts observations and data collection (such as inter-observer agreement (IOA) data and treatment integrity checks) in the residential, day services, and community program settings to monitor data collection reliability and treatment integrity; provides modeling, training, and feedback to staff when needed
  • Graph data and generate progress reports that show the status of current interventions
  • Covers programmatic vacancies if needed by working with individuals as a direct-care when staffing is needed
  • Reviews behavior data sheets, teaching goal data sheets, incident reports, and other programmatic documentation to ensure consistent and accurate completion
  • Contributes in clinical review meetings to evaluate progress and guide data-driven decisions related to programming
  • Participates in Behavior Management Committee, Human Rights Committee, and Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings by providing clinical input that helps promote high-quality clinical programming
  • Maintains contacts with family and other integral team members to provide timely, effective communication
  • Attends psychiatric and medical appointments, when needed, to relay clinically-relevant data and information to medical and psychiatric staff to ensure clinically driven decision making
  • Assists BCBA and staff development team with New Employee Orientation classes, including crisis prevention and management curriculum and Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) to develop strong, knowledgeable staff
  • Works with, understands, and complies with terms and conditions of collective bargaining agreements (CBA) within a unionized environment
  • Maintains current state-mandated training and certifications
  • Follows all current policies and procedures of Elwyn New Jersey
  • Cooperates with Elwyn New Jersey and the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services, or any other authorized investigating body during an inspection or investigation
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), crisis intervention, and medication administration using agency-trained protocols
  • Assumes rotational management on call as scheduled
  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, special education or related field; master's degree preferred
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred
  • Experience utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Experience utilizing Positive Behavior Supports preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage and prioritize multiple, often competing, priorities
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment with the ability to independently solve problems and make decisions with little or no need for direct supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
  • Must be able to perform CPR and safe care using agency-trained protocols
  • Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience using/knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) / Electronic Medical Record (EMR) preferred
  • QBS? Safety Care? certification as Master Trainer a plus
  • Must possess a current, valid driver's license in state of residence, have a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience within the United States, and have an acceptable driving record
