Job Summary


The Clinical Lab Scientist Specialist will perform Transfusion Service procedures and tasks, manually and utilizing automated equipment.

Partner with supervisors to provide effective and efficient management of daily operations and appropriate response to patient needs for the Transfusion services at all facilities. Assume the duties and responsibilities of any of the blood bank rotations as assigned and determined by the operational needs of the service. Provide cross coverage for other specialist tasks as needed.

Communicate effectively. Enter date/test results into computer accurately.

  1. Partner with supervisors to provide effective and efficient management of daily operations and appropriate response to patient needs for the Transfusion services at all facilities, including writing of procedures, data collection and analysis, project management , process improvement activities and other duties as assigned.
  2. Provide cross-coverage for critical tasks related to Computer/LIS, QA/Compliance, Immunohematology, Equipment/QC, and Training tasks.
  3. Communicate effectively. Enter data/test results into computer accurately.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $72.96 - $90.91 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Three to five years of Blood Bank or transfusion service experience in a moderate to complex environment, with solid experience in blood bank LIS application.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experienced with maintenance of LIS in Blood Bank preferred.
  • Experience troubleshooting computer hardware/software and/or equipment problems.
  • Experience writing and/or revising SOPs, performing audit, data analysis
  • Solid experience with word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Demonstrated superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills, and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Assume responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review.
  • Evaluates new programs and/or procedures and makes recommendations, as requested by a Blood Bank Supervisor.
  • Assumes limited supervisory responsibilities as assigned by a Blood Bank Supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience bench teaching, including orientation and training of employee preferred.
  • SBB certification preferred. Five years of Blood Bank or transfusion service experience in a moderate to highly complex environment, to include, but not exclusive of, experience in:
a. Selection and crossmatch of blood for the sensitized or problem recipient.
b. Antibody identification and titers.
c. Serological follow-up of transfusion reactions.
d. Blood Bank quality control procedures.
e. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
f. Problems associated with transplantation, e.g., serological CMV, etc.
g. Problems associated with transfusion of the neonate.
h. Teaching, including orientation and training of new CLSs and Lab Assistants as well as the medical staff.

License/Certification


  • A valid California Department of Health Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or a limited license in Immunohematology.
  • Maintain active license and follow Clinical Lab CLS licensure policy.
