Assistant Director of Residential Life
(Housing)
SUNY Broome Community College is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, salaried, 12-month, live-in, Assistant Director of Residential Life for the Student Village. This administrative position reports to the Director of Housing and Residential Life (Director).
The Assistant Director of Residential Life (ADRL) supports the department's operations, policies, and procedures, and works with campus partners to achieve student success initiatives. Primarily focused on the students and their success, the Assistant Director is also responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of the Resident Assistants (RAs). In addition, they oversee Student Village programming and collaborate with the Assistant Director of Housing (ADH) in a variety of initiatives and operations, as well as campus partners, in support of residents. The ADRL manages and performs administrative functions as required thus ensuring the Student Village is a safe living and learning environment. The ADRL supervises the department in the absence of the Director and the ADH. May supervise other student staff and graduate staff/interns.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Implements student development programming and ensures consistent community events, including tracking attendance and assessing impact.
- In collaboration with the Director, oversees the RA recruitment and selection process; including hiring, training, evaluation, and ongoing staff development.
- Plans and facilitates RA meetings and weekly agendas.
- Assists with crisis intervention and conflict management, including mental health incidents, roommate conflicts, student conduct, and staffing issues.
- Assists with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and activities for Student Village residents.
- Collaborates with the Director on opening and closing processes, including procedures, responsibilities, and building inspections.
- Supports conduct processes under the direction of the Dean of Student's Office.
- Rotates on-call responsibilities with other professional staff.
- Serves on College committees for student and RA initiatives.
- Ensures that adequate student programming and community events occur, tracking attendance and assessing the events.
- Collaborates with campus offices and community partners to implement special projects for students and RAs in the Student Village that positively contribute to their development.
- Produces Student Village newsletters on a consistent schedule.
- Identifies and provides outreach to students who are at-risk or who are in academic jeopardy.
- Utilizes database systems regularly to track students concerns, housing records, meal plan usage, and outreach.
- Works with the Director in the hiring, training and supervision of summer employees as needed.
- Assists Education Opportunity Program (EOP) campus partners in the supervision and training of EOP academy employees.
- Coordinates all processes related to camps, conferences, and the EOP Academy, including managing required paperwork, key distribution, orientations, and communicating Student Village expectations.
- Performs other essential functions and related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related field as required. A Master's degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field is preferred.
- Three (3) years of previous professional housing, residential life, or student affairs experience required.
- Demonstrated work experience and skills related to program and community development required.
- Demonstrated experience or understanding of housing operations is preferred.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.
Required Skills:
- Strong leadership, verbal/written communication, organizational, administrative, and Interpersonal skills.
- Strong time-management abilities with the capacity to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain confidential records.
- Proficiency with technology and ability/willingness to learn new software quickly.
- Familiarity with residence hall living.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, staff, and external constituencies.
- Conflict resolution and crisis management.
- Ability to make sound decisions independently, especially during high-pressure situations.
Special Requirements:
- The employee must live in the Student Village in a staff apartment, at no cost to the employee.
- Flexibility to work non-traditional hours to meet the needs of students. May require evenings, weekends, and holidays for programming, duty rotations, and emergency response.
- The employee receives a meal plan each Fall and Spring semester, at no cost to the employee, with the expectation that the meal plan be used to develop community with the students by joining the students for meals throughout the semester. Meal plan services are not provided during scheduled semester breaks, winter or summer terms.
Additional Information:
The minimum annual salary rate for this position is $62,147. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
