UCI Beall Applied Innovation's (BAI) purpose is to measurably improve lives through access to UCI-developed knowledge. We partner with researchers and industry to move UCI knowledge and discoveries into products and markets. With this goal, we collaborate closely with faculty/researchers, industry, and entrepreneurs to carry out a variety of projects and programs with four pillars of BAI's teams: Research Translation, New Ventures, Enterprise Collaborations, and Industry Sponsored Research. BAI is currently located at UCI Research Park. Our physical building, known as the Cove@UCI, provides office space for BAI staff, offers sublease space for emerging UCI ecosystem start-ups and partners, and a venue for programs and events designed to foster university-industry collaboration.


Your Role on the Team

BAI's Assistant Director, Facilities and Technology Services, is responsible for managing the operations, project planning, project execution, and physical maintenance of AV/IT, facilities, and subleases. This role manages a team comprised of professionals in various fields and assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinates. With a strategic mindset, this employee plans both long-term and short-term for noted functions to deliver results. Managing risk and minimizing erroneous decisions or failures to achieve goals is an important part of this role, as these result in additional costs and delays to overall schedules. This role receives assignments as objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals by formulating, implementing, and monitoring facilities management policies and programs, and by managing fiscal, physical, and personnel resources. They are responsible for supervising all building maintenance activities and overseeing after-hours/holiday building/facilities operations to ensure safety, and for taking appropriate action in emergency situations. This role oversees and participates in design and construction projects throughout the facility.

  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues, recognize patterns, and identify multiple logical options for resolution. Innovative problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead, mentor, and motivate others, including technical staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry best practices. Experience and knowledge to inspect construction in progress (general and specialty structures) and read and interpret plans/blueprints/schematics, and specifications.
  • Solid knowledge in supervising facility maintenance and improvements, along with building maintenance work to include one or more of the following: basic plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, painting and plastering, service of machinery, electrical maintenance, and custodial.
  • Thorough knowledge in the areas of building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, emergency preparedness, organization, and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Working knowledge of and experience in planning, design, construction, environmental issues, legal issues, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and practices governing planning, building design, and construction.
  • Skills in creating basic working drawings describing renovations and remodeling of existing laboratory and administrative support space. Skills to develop and maintain electronic layouts of space and provide ongoing analysis of space assignments, utilization, and project needs.
  • Thorough knowledge of AV and IT industry best practices and service delivery principles. Broad knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software. Possess up-to-date knowledge of the field of information management and able to stay abreast of the latest trends and vendor offerings.
  • Extensive knowledge in construction and IT project management for complex development and public facilities. Ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate a variety of technical, building, and renovation projects simultaneously, meeting changing and conflicting deadlines, as well as evaluate vendors and manage contracts.
  • Knowledge and ability to plan for the acquisition, development, and management of data or information management systems.
  • Has broad knowledge of business and technical support function and working knowledge of other areas of IT sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment, and direction.
  • Experience with hardware and software applications used to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and securely retrieve data.
  • Experience in facilities and AV/IT budgeting, purchasing, and cost control to develop realistic cost estimates and operating budgets.
  • Positive work attitude, willing to work as a cooperative and collaborative team member of the administration in support of the goals and objectives of BAI.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • A minimum of 7 years of experienceFacilities management

Preferred:

  • University of California employment experience,
  • Master's degree preferred.

Special Conditions:

  • This role is responsible for addressing any facility needs 24/7 and will be equipped with tools to assist with remote monitoring.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $108,100- $204,900 (Annual).
