Overview

Is able to effectively navigate the EKG reporting system to ensure that EKG's performed in the institution are processed for quality control. EKGs are assigned to Providers for interpretation in a timely manner. EEO/AA/Disability/Veteran.

Responsibilities

  • 1. 1. Is familiar with the proper process for taking an ekg to identify errors in workflow and help areas prevent such errors in the future. 1.1 Inputs patient information in a computerized EKG machine or uses bar code scanner prior to procedure. 1.2 Inputs all appropriate information correctly. (Name, unit number, sex, age, location, etc.) 1.2 Verifies accuracy of information. 1.3 Is able to explain the proper steps for using the bar code scanner to users
  • 2. 2. Reviews all EKG tracings for demographic accuracy, orders and presence of excess artifact 2.1 Reviews all EKGs for accurate and mandatory demographic information. Editing files as necessary 2.2 Reviews all EKGs for quality and arranges repeat exams as necessary by contacting the departments. 2.3 Obtains Epic orders for EKGs that come through the system without an order. Communicating the need for the order with the RN or provider 2.4 Provides technical support or assistance of the clinical areas if needed

Performs quality control checks of EKG machines throughout the year 3.1 Performs audits of EKG machines on each unit to determine if EKGs are stored in the Archive 3.2 Transfers any EKGs found and obtains Epic orders when possible 3.3 Follows up with leadership when EKGs are found and offers training of staff 3.4 Assists with calling for service of equipment when required.
  • 4. 4. Responsible for the timely download of EKGs for interpretation 4.1 Assigns EKGS to the appropriate physician queue for interpretation on a daily basis 4.2 Keeps track of the number of EKGs assigned to each reader and making sure they do not get more than the required amount 4.3 Communicates with physician readers so they are aware of the reading schedule and provide support as needed
  • 5. 5. Conducts in-service on EKG machine and Bar code reader if needed. 5.1 Thoroughly and clearly explains use of EKG equipment to a variety of audiences such as student nurses, new employees, etc. 5.2 Ensures that each individual has a complete understanding of EKG equipment. After completion of inservice, responds to questions in a knowledgeable manner.

Rectifies errors within the EKG system to ensure quality control and patient safety. 6.1 Responsible for contacting the user and/or department leadership about the error 6.2 Work with unit to identify the correct demographics for the EKG in question and make corrections as necessary 6.3 Submit Safer Event through the proper program to help document the error and that it was corrected
  • 7. 7. Demonstrates commitment to coworkers, EKG department and the hospital through general standards of professional behavior to facilitate the efficient and smooth operations of the EKG department. 7.1 When requested, the employee is willing to work overtime or adjust their schedule to accommodate unanticipated needs of the department 7.2 Communicated in a timely fashion to the EKG Coordinator or HVC Manager about concerns or patterns of errors seen

Qualifications

EDUCATION

HS diploma or GED Must have prior EKG training **Employees employed by YNHH effective 9/12/2012 as a result of the acquisition of the Hospital of St Raphael may meet educational requirements with the applicable combination of education and experience and demonstration of current competences.

EXPERIENCE

Six (6) months to one (1) year experience in EKG training.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Competency in case managing patients treated at the hospital regardless of age, disability, sexual preferences, gender, and ethnicity.
