Job Summary

Under the direction of the Clinical Operations Administrator, in concert with the Chiefs of the Anesthesia Service serve as the Manager of both the Small and Large Animal Anesthesia services. Work closely with Clinical Operations Administrator and Chiefs of Service to ensure that the respective services accomplish their primary mission of effectively improving their services and providing excellent patient care. Achieve goals such as minimizing medical errors and improving process efficiency, creating a safer environment while reducing costs and improving patient care. Responsible for the direct supervision of skilled employees and provide management functions including probationary and annual reviews, counseling and disciplinary actions, maintaining appropriate staffing levels, and evaluating clinical competency. Coordinate the professional development of staff. Perform fiscal and resource planning and management to ensure accountability and stewardship of service resources, including monitoring clinical equipment needs, cost effective inventory management, and staff time keeping. Apply analytical methods to improve process capability and reduction of process variation. Develop technical reports that result in impactful decision making and perform special projects that will enhance the designated services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • No minimum education required.
  • Experience supervising staff in a hospital, veterinary specialty or emergency service setting, including negotiating conflicting demands for competing resources and addressing staff training needs in specific skills in a complex and dynamic clinical setting.
  • Experience communicating with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, referring veterinarians, students, and staff in an accurate, professional and collegial manner.
  • Experience working independently or as part of a team to coordinate, facilitate, set up equipment and supplies, troubleshoot and anticipate needs for activities in assigned areas in an accurate, efficient and timely manner.
  • Oral and written communication skills with a diverse group of people, including clients, clinicians, referring veterinarians, students and staff in regard to veterinary care and operative management of small animal patients.
  • Ability to maintain and assess inventory and supplies necessary for veterinary specialty services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skill in proactively seeking ways to improve the working of the team and to bring suggestions to the attention of the Clinical Operations Administrator and/or Service Chief.
  • Knowledge of University Policy and Procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and VMTH policies.
  • Skills to investigate and oversee the investigation of alleged quality assurance infractions and to recognize emergency situations and follow emergency treatment protocols in an efficient manner.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
