Under the supervision of the surgeon, The Surgical Tech First Assist (ST-FA) is a role whichprovidesadditionalassistance to the surgeon in the Operating Room over and above that normally provided. As defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), surgical assistants provide aid in exposure,hemostasis, closure, and other interoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safer operation withoptimalresults for the patient.In addition, the ST-FA may perform in the role of the Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room as needed. Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality. Under the guidance of the surgeon, the Surgical Technologist - First Assist (STFA) provides advanced, handson support during surgical procedures. This role goes beyond traditional surgical technologist responsibilities, contributing directly to patient safety, surgical efficiency, and optimal outcomes.

You'll work sidebyside with surgeons and OR teams, serving as a trusted clinical partner throughout every procedure.

???? What You'll Do ???? In the Operating Room
  • Assist surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical tasks
  • Function as a Surgical Technologist as needed
  • Anticipate surgeon preferences and patient needs (sutures, specialty supplies, instrumentation)
  • Ensure implants and specialized equipment are available and functioning properly
  • Monitor patient status and respond to potential complications
???? Teamwork & Communication
  • Serve as a vital clinical resource within the OR
  • Promote a collaborative, respectful, teamoriented environment
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and OR staff
  • Coordinate workflow to support smooth, efficient surgical cases
???? Commitment to Safety & Aseptic Excellence
  • Maintain strict sterile field integrity and infection prevention standards
  • Identify and communicate potential risks for surgical site infections
  • Perform and model proper hand scrubs and OR attire compliance
  • Safely handle, contain, and transport contaminated instruments and supplies
  • Participate in pointofuse cleaning and contamination control

  • Complete ongoing education to maintain competency and certification
  • Assist with onboarding and mentoring coworkers and students
  • Attend handson training and equipment inservices
  • Participate in evaluating new products, procedures, and quality initiatives
???? Scope Limitations

For patient safety, this role does not include:

  • Administering or injecting medications for local anesthesia or sedation
  • Inserting urinary catheters
What We're Looking For Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of fulltime scrub experience (routine and complex cases)
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
