Director, Subcontracts

Building on our past. Ready for the future.
Worley is a global professional services company of energy, chemicals and resources experts. We partner with customers to deliver projects and create value over the life of their assets. We're bridging two worlds, moving towards more sustainable energy sources, while helping to provide the energy, chemicals and resources needed now.

Play an integral role in shaping how we engage, negotiate, and manage the partnerships that deliver some of the world's most complex energy, chemicals, and resource projects.

As Director, Subcontracts, you lead the strategy, governance, and execution of subcontracting across major projects or defined business areas. You operate at a level where commercial insight, contractual rigor, and leadership alignment directly influence project performance and long-term business outcomes.

You will be responsible for ensuring that subcontracting practices protect Worley's interests, preserve client rights and remedies, and enable safe, efficient, and compliant project delivery.

Worley is entering a period where disciplined commercial leadership is essential. We are executing complex capital programs, managing evolving risk landscapes, and partnering closely with clients to deliver sustainable outcomes. In this role, you create clarity, structure, and strategic direction within the subcontracting function-aligning commercial execution with enterprise objectives.

Purpose of the role

The Director, Subcontracts completes and oversees contract assignments across all phases of contractual undertakings, typically handling highly complex agreements with significant commercial exposure.

You establish the purpose and vision for the subcontracting function within your area of responsibility. You develop and implement strategic programs, policies, and procedures that support both current and future operational goals. Your leadership ensures that subcontractor selection, negotiation, administration, and performance management are executed with rigor and consistency.

Where Worley manages contracts on behalf of a client, you collaborate closely with designated client representatives to ensure alignment, transparency, and disciplined contract governance.

Core Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the identification, solicitation, and selection of qualified contractors to provide consulting, specialty, and construction services that support project execution.
  • Negotiating complex commercial terms and conditions with a thorough understanding of risk allocation, liability structures, and commercial frameworks.
  • Preparing and executing subcontracts in alignment with project strategy, company policies, and client requirements.
  • Managing post-award contract administration, including change management, variations, and formal correspondence.
  • Analyzing and responding to contractor communications in a manner that preserves contractual rights and remedies.
  • Developing and implementing claims defense strategies in collaboration with Legal and project leadership when disputes arise.
  • Monitoring contractor performance to ensure compliance with scope, schedule, cost, safety, and quality expectations.
  • Reviewing and approving supporting documentation for subcontractor invoices to confirm delivery of required services.
  • Providing strategic commercial guidance to project teams and senior leadership.
  • Establishing objectives, policies, and procedures for the subcontracting function that align with organizational direction.
  • Leading, mentoring, and developing subcontract professionals, including decisions related to selection, training, performance management, and remuneration.
  • Driving cross-functional collaboration across project management, engineering, construction, finance, legal, and supply chain teams.
  • Contributing to the development and refinement of systems, processes, and tools that strengthen subcontract governance and operational efficiency.

You operate with broad management authority, making independent decisions that impact long-range planning, coordination, and technical direction. Your decisions influence regional or project-level business results.

You demonstrate:

  • Advanced knowledge of contract law principles and commercial risk management.
  • Proven expertise negotiating high-value and complex subcontracts within engineering, construction, or energy environments.
  • Strong command of post-award contract management, including claims mitigation and defense strategy.
  • Experience managing contracts on behalf of clients while maintaining strict governance and professional objectivity.

You are pragmatic. You balance commercial protection with project delivery realities. You are collaborative, working effectively across disciplines and with external partners. You understand that disciplined subcontract management is not administrative-it is strategic.
