Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent plus 10 years of professional experience to include 3 years of supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
UHC Minimum:
* B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field preferred and/or has satisfied the academic requirements of the State of Georgia Laboratory Licensure Law, chapter 111-8-10-.06 required.
* Five (5) years of applicable clinical laboratory experience as a medical laboratory scientist
* MT/ MLS or State of Georgia accepted certification equivalent required.

UHC Preferred:
* Clinical laboratory supervisory experience preferred.
* Computer skills to include Windows, Microsoft office, electronic medical record ( EMR) and laboratory information systems ( LIS), interfaced equipment, faxing and reference laboratory reporting.
* Experience with financial/reimbursement aspects of Laboratory Management.
* Experience with Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation Standards, CLIA Regulations and Federal and State laboratory regulatory and safety standards.
* Demonstrated leadership, managerial, organizational, and communication skills.
* Extensive technical knowledge in the field of medical laboratory science is required.
Position Summary
The Laboratory Manager is an integral member of University Health Center Medical Services and reports directly to the Senior Director of Medical Services. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the professional, technical, and financial activities of the clinical laboratory. This position ensures that the laboratory delivers accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic services that meet the needs of patients, providers, administrative leadership, and the broader health services team. The Laboratory Manager oversees the efficient, safe, and costeffective operation of the laboratory and ensures full compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and institutional policies.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Knowledge of laboratory regulatory, licensure, and accreditation processes applicable to waived, moderate, and high-complexity testing.
  • Skill in leadership and supervision, including staff development, competency assessment, and performance management.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and independent judgment to operational, clinical, and compliance-related decisions.
  • Skill in prioritizing, organizing, and managing laboratory workflows to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clinicians, staff, patients, and administrative stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality of patient and institutional information.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory information systems, electronic medical records, and interfaced laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory inventory, financial, and resource management practices.
  • Ability to apply quality assurance and performance improvement principles to laboratory operations.

Leadership/Competency:

  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of UHC systems and processes to guide laboratory operations and support informed decisionmaking.
  • Collaborates and facilitates departmental teamwork and promotes interdisciplinary approach to improving patient-centered service.
  • Initiates performance improvement processes and evaluates purpose and outcome.
  • Manages laboratory compliance with UGA & UHC policies, related regulatory and accreditation agencies: Joint Commission, Georgia Department of Human Resources, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), HIPAA, FERPA, and others.
  • Oversees competency assessment processes to ensure laboratory staff consistently meet established technical and professional standards.
  • Directs clinical staff in the appropriate selection of laboratory tests, specimen collection procedures, and interpretation of results.
  • Serves on the Diagnostic Services Committee, often taking on a leadership role within the group.
  • Collaborates with the UHC Director of Medical Services and other appropriate UGA Faculty/Staff regarding research projects and pertinent application of clinical lab services.
  • Implements the strategic and technical directives of Laboratory Director.
  • Establishes a clear leadership framework that empowers staff to perform at a high level and consistently achieve quality laboratory outcomes.
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals for staff, in consultation with other team members as needed.
  • Actively promotes development, engagement & retention of each staff member.

Managing Operations:

  • Adjusts priorities to meet changing operational requirements.
  • Provides leadership in designing, monitoring, and optimizing laboratory workflows to ensure efficient, effective, and highquality operations.
  • Evaluates products and orders needed equipment and supplies, provides and maintains equipment necessary to accomplish area functions.
  • Oversees quality assurance surveillance for UHC Laboratory, including quality control records, IQCP, and PI projects, as well as maintaining proficiency testing program participation.
  • Leads the development, review, and continuous improvement of the laboratory's technical policies and procedures, ensuring they align with regulatory standards and departmental goals.
  • Maintains collaborative working relationships, including support, supplies, procedures, and billing, with external reference laboratories such as LabCorp, Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, and Quest.
  • Oversees compliance with Laboratory environmental and safety regulations.

  • Provides leadership in planning, implementing, and managing the laboratory's expense and revenue budgets, ensuring responsible resource stewardship, adherence to reimbursement guidelines, and accountability for meeting annual financial targets to support sustainable service delivery.
  • Serves as the primary leadership contact for patients, parents, reference laboratories, and UHC Business Services, facilitating clear communication and resolving laboratoryrelated insurance and billing matters with professionalism and accuracy.

  • Provides managerial oversight of the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to ensure reliable performance, system connectivity, and full integration with clinical and administrative platforms.
  • Oversees daily, weekly, monthly, and ad hoc LIS/EHR monitoring activities.
  • Directs the setup, configuration, and maintenance of new laboratory tests within the LIS and EHR to support clinical service needs.
  • Leads the resolution of LIS and interfacerelated issues by coordinating with UHC IT and the LIS vendor to ensure timely and effective solutions.
  • Ensures the confidentiality, security, and integrity of laboratory data and information systems.
  • Provides and interprets laboratory utilization data for patient-focused decision making.
