Primary Function Responsible for the advanced technical installation, maintenance, and repair of the hospital's plumbing infrastructure, with a specialized focus on Medical Gas systems, backflow prevention, and water-based systems. This role is integral to ensure that all systems meet or exceed the stringent standards set by NFPA 99, ASSE, OSHA, and The Joint Commission (TJC). The successful candidate supports the WBAMC mission by ensuring the integrity of medical facility infrastructure through the use of DMLSS/LogiCole for work order execution and by assisting in the development of estimates for service orders. Essential Duties
Install, inspect, test, and maintain medical gas piping and associated equipment in strict compliance with NFPA 99 and ASSE 6010. Conduct regular system integrity checks and leak detection to ensure uninterrupted delivery of gases critical to patient care. Maintain and repair air, gas, water, and sewer pipes, fittings, and fixtures throughout inpatient units, surgical suites, and laboratories. Perform system upgrades and modifications to accommodate new construction or facility alterations. Inspect, maintain, repair, and certify backflow prevention assemblies to protect potable water systems. Maintain domestic water, hydronic heating, and chilled water systems to ensure consistent hospital performance. Ensure all work adheres to TJC, and NFPA standards. Maintain detailed service logs and comprehensive documentation for inspections and compliance audits via DMLSS/LogiCole. When required, assist in estimating costs and materials for plumbing modifications or alterations to support the facility service order process. Respond promptly to urgent issues (leaks, blockages) to minimize operational downtime. Perform all tasks in accordance with OSHA rules, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and established Activity Hazard Analyses (AHA). Coordinate with safety and infection control teams to ensure all activities meet hospital hygiene and ICRA requirements. All other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities N/A Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Knowledge of welding, brazing, and soldering; ability to work from blueprints, schematic diagrams, and specifications. Ability to identify root causes for malfunctions and determine requirements for additional equipment or modifications. Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 90 lbs (e.g., pumps) and lift 40 lbs overhead. Ability to crawl in interstitial spaces and distinguish sounds to identify leaks or motor problems. Must be able to discern colors to work on color-coded valves and electrical wiring.
Required Qualifications Education and Experience:
Five years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in commercial or industrial plumbing maintenance work. Completion of a formal apprenticeship program as a plumber. (Preferred): Two years of experience in a healthcare or regulated industrial environment.
Licenses and Certifications:
High School Diploma/GED or higher education. Valid Driver's License. Journeyman Plumber's License (Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners). (Preferred): Medical Gas Systems Certification (ASSE 6010 or equivalent) required. (Preferred): Backflow Testing Certification within the first 12 months of employment. (Preferred): Water based NICET II certification Familiarity with NFPA 99, TJC, and OSHA standards.
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures ranging from 10F to 120F. Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and respirators when working with hazardous chemicals or gases. Must be physically able to work in confined spaces, such as ductwork and crawl spaces, and on ladders or scaffolds up to 40 ft. Must pass a background check for military installation access. Availability for on-call rotation and after-hours emergency response is required.
