Research Associate, Department of Genome Sciences

The Onengut Lab in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking an independent, highly-motivated PhD-level scientist with a strong background in the biology and analysis of single cell genomic datasets. The successful candidate will work on dissecting pathways which lead to increased susceptibility to type 1 diabetes. We use genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics to understand how genomic loci associated with type 1 diabetes function at the molecular level and as part of a network of other genes to regulate islet autoimmunity. The project involves generating data from longitudinally collected human peripheral blood mononuclear cell at single cell level (CITE-seq) across individuals. As part of this effort, we are looking for a highly motivated individual with a background in human biology, single cell genomics, and computational biology to lead research efforts within this project. This position and work are funded by a recent R01.

Key Responsibilities:

• Implement computational approaches to analyze, integrate, and interpret genomic data, particularly whole genome sequencing data, single-cell RNA-seq and single-cell cell surface protein-seq (CITE-seq)
• Utilize an array of computational approaches to understand the role T1D risk variants play in initiation and progression of autoimmunity
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance our understanding of autoimmune disorders
• Be responsible for communicating results to the scientific community through conference presentations and publications

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong background in data analysis.
• Experience with single-cell RNA, CITE-seq and/or multiome-sequencing data, molecular biology, and analyses that integrate genomic variations
• Analysis of large datasets
• Interest in human genetics and autoimmune disorders
• A solid background in both programming and biology
• Enthusiastic team player with excellent communication skills

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
