Responsibilities for this Position

This isn't a typical management role; this is a founding leadership opportunity. General Dynamics Mission Systems is seeking an entrepreneurial and technically astute Senior Manager to co-found our new AI Reliability Engineering (AIRE) team. You will be the essential partner to our lead technical architect, forming a powerful leadership duo destined to redefine how software is built and operated at GDMS.

While our architect drives the technical "what" and "how," you will own the "who" and "when," building a world-class team from the ground up. This is a role for a "player-coach" someone who is passionate about mentoring people and delivering impactful products, but who also thrives on staying deeply engaged with the technology. You will be instrumental in shaping the team's culture, orchestrating the delivery of our flagship pilot project, and building the operational backbone for a team that functions like a startup within a world-class enterprise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build the Team: Recruit, hire, and onboard a world-class team of engineers and designers. As the team's dedicated people leader, you will foster their careers, manage performance (GPS), and cultivate a culture of innovation, psychological safety, and high-impact results.
  • Orchestrate Delivery: Masterfully orchestrate the execution of the team's projects, managing the roadmap, timelines, and budget to deliver our groundbreaking pilot on time and with exceptional quality.
  • Champion the Vision: Serve as the team's primary advocate, communicating progress, risks, and successes to executive leadership. You will shield the team from organizational friction, allowing them to maintain focus and velocity.
  • Stay Technically Engaged: Maintain and grow your technical depth by staying deeply embedded in architectural discussions, technical debates, and the strategic direction of our AI and SRE toolchains. You will be a key contributor to the "how" as well as the "who."

Strategic Partnership: Form a seamless partnership with the Lead Software Architect, acting as a strategic sounding board and ensuring the team's engineering efforts are perfectly aligned with business objectives

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in a software leadership role with direct people management responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex software development projects from conception to launch.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for building teams and products from scratch.
  • A strong "player-coach" mentality with a desire to lead from the front while empowering your team.
  • A solid background as a software engineer, enabling you to contribute meaningfully to technical discussions and earn the respect of a highly technical team.
  • Expertise in modern Agile, DevOps, and SRE principles.
  • Exceptional ability to navigate ambiguity and lead a team through a fast-paced, innovative environment.
  • A genuine passion for technology and a curiosity for how AI and automation can transform the way we work.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is REQUIRED at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
