About the Job

This position is for a full-time, temporary staff research engineer at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota.This position will last six months. The employee will work within SAFL's Applied Research and Engineering Team and will be responsible for supporting contract research services in the areas of hydropower energy, physical hydraulic modeling, component design, and fabrication (60%). The position will also support development of technology transfer and educational components technology development and research (40%). The employee will work with SAFL Associate Director for Engineering and Facilities, university faculty, SAFL technical staff, and researchers. We seek a reliable and motivated engineer who is interested in helping develop applied research areas in the broad area of environmental hydraulics. This engineer also needs to be "hands-on" and would be excited to contribute to physical model design and construction. The position also carries responsibility for assisting with public communication and provides the opportunity to collaborate with academic, agency, and industry partners.

Qualifications

Required:
* BA/BS in Engineering - civil, mechanical, naval architecture, or marine engineering plus at least two years of experience or a combination of education and work experience to equal at least six years
* Experience in working in water hydraulic research and laboratory setting.
* Interest in participating in engineering research.
* Must be able to work safely in construction, laboratory, and field environments including
frequently lifting 50 pounds and traversing difficult terrain.

Preferred:
* MS in Engineering - civil, mechanical, naval architecture, or marine engineering
* Experience with proposals, report development, and presenting in a public setting.
* Experience in research settings relating to water resources engineering, energy
conversion technologies, or fluid mechanics.
* Experience with manufacturing design and fabrication including 3D printing and CNC
fabrication.
* Familiarity with data collection and instrumentation such as flow measurement, data
loggers, telemetry, and environmental sensors.
* Demonstrated experience with conventional construction or shop tools.
* Computer aided design software experience, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google suite Apps

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $31-$34 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
