Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Invasive Cardiology (RCIS Certified) Registered Nurse Specialist specializes interventional cardiology critical care and is responsible for all aspects of safe patient care delivery for patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional, and electrophysiology procedures in Invasive Cardiology Labs. In addition to assisting physicians with invasive cardiology procedures, this position oversees the technical operations required for the performance of routine diagnostics and interventional cardiovascular procedures.

This position provides direct patient nursing care in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and with the policies, values, and mission of Denver Health. Requires proper sterile technique and will assist the physician with diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiology procedures. Requires the operation and troubleshooting skills of specialty equipment and x-ray systems within scope of practice and applicable registration and/or licensure. The RN Specialist, Invasive Cardiology (RCIS Certified) performs all procedures with proficiency and demonstrates technical expertise, making a significant contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cardiac dysfunction. Requires expert clinical and technical knowledge to collect and assess data, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, to provide therapeutic care for patient and family systematically and continuously. This position will participate in the overnight and weekend Invasive Cardiology call pool as part of an emergency response team.

Adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Nursing Administration Scope and Standards of Practice (2025) to provide leadership with the nursing process. Utilize and support the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas as a part of his or her daily practice. "Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder / Director, Watson caring Science Institute."

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate verbally, in EMR, and hemodynamic program across all roles: scrub, monitor, and circulate. (20%)
  • Anticipate the needs of the patient and physician based on the procedures performed across all roles: scrub, monitor, and circulate. Utilizes critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and ability to work with minimal supervision within scope of practice in a fast-paced procedural environment. (20%)
  • Administers conscious sedation and/or medications to support cardiovascular and electrophysiology cases within scope of practice and demonstrated competencies. (20%)
  • Operates complex specialty equipment within scope of practice and demonstrated competencies for patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional, and electrophysiology procedures in Invasive Cardiology. (20%)
  • This position requires the individual to be flexible in their work schedule including but not limited to extended shifts and on-call per operational needs. Ability to arrive in thirty (30) minutes or less for after-hours call situations, required. (20%)

Education:

  • Associate's Degree Nursing program required.
  • Bachelor's Degree BSN preferred.

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years Invasive Cardiology Cardiac Catheterization (Cath)/Electrophysiology (EP) Lab experience with interventional cardiology focus required.

Licenses:

  • RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies required.
  • RCIS-Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist - CCI - Care Coordination Institute required.
  • Fluoroscopy Operator registration through CHPHE required.
  • ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association required.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in performing all aspects of monitoring, scrubbing, circulating and conscious sedation within scope of practice for Cath/EP lab procedures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency related to cardiovascular theory and technical skill.
  • Ability to effectively teach and precept staff in cardiovascular theory and technical skills.
  • Competency with imaging and specialized cardiovascular and electrophysiology equipment within scope of practice, certification, and licensure and/or registration.
  • Serves as a role model to all personnel by demonstrating a high level of expertise with invasive cardiology systems, including trouble-shooting skills, effective interactions with patients & staff, leadership ability and professional behavior.
  • High level of professionalism and accountability.
  • Excellent critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • EPIC Skills or other EMR skill required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office preferred.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently.
