SUMMARY: The Application Design Enterprise Platforms Lead serves as the principal technical architect responsible for defining, designing, and governing the enterprise application and integration architecture across BankUnited. This role provides deep technical leadership across distributed systems, microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native platform services--ensuring that all solutions are scalable, secure, reliable, and aligned with long-term enterprise strategy. Acting as a hands-on architecture authority, the Lead Architect translates complex business and functional requirements into actionable, high-quality architecture artifacts and detailed low-level designs that guide engineering teams through execution. The role partners closely with platform engineering, application development, integration teams, cloud and infrastructure engineering, cybersecurity, and product owners to ensure architectural consistency, platform cohesion, and delivery excellence across the enterprise technology ecosystem. This leader plays a critical role in driving modernization by evolving legacy platforms, establishing architectural standards, and championing reusable patterns that accelerate development, improve resilience, and reduce operational complexity.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and special projects may be assigned.
- Architecture Leadership & Strategy:
- Defines the architectural vision and technical roadmap for enterprise platforms, ensuring alignment with organizational strategy and modernization goals.
- Establishes and maintains enterprise architecture standards, reference architectures, integration patterns, and governance frameworks.
- Leads the evolution of legacy systems to cloud-native, modular, and API driven architectures.
- Technical Architecture & Low-Level Design:
- Produces detailed architecture documentation including low level designs, sequence diagrams, data flow diagrams, integration specifications, and platform contracts.
- Provides hands-on technical guidance across engineering teams to ensure solutions are built according to architectural direction.
- Conducts architecture and design reviews, ensuring technical rigor, security, scalability, and alignment with best practices.
- Platform Engineering & Integration Enablement:
- Partners with integration and platform engineering teams to deliver high performance, resilient, and secure platform services.
- Guides to the adoption of microservices, event-driven architecture, and cloud-native patterns across application teams.
- Ensures the platform supports automation, observability, CI/CD, and operational excellence.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborates with product, engineering, cloud, security, and infrastructure leaders to translate business requirements into well-architected solutions.
- Influences and guides engineering delivery teams to ensure architectural consistency and adherence to standards.
- Acts as a trusted technical advisor during project planning, solution design, and production implementation phases.
- Security, Compliance & Risk Management:
- Embeds secure-by-design principles into all solution architectures.
- Ensures solutions comply with banking regulatory requirements, cybersecurity standards, and audit mandates.
- Supports risk assessments, threat modeling, and the implementation of architecture patterns that mitigate operational and security risks.
- Thought Leadership & Mentoring:
- Mentors engineers, architects, and technical lead to elevating the enterprise's overall technical maturity.
- Promotes a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
- Stays current with emerging technologies and evaluate their fit for enterprise adoption.
- Adheres to and complies with applicable, federal and state laws, regulations and guidance, including those related to anti-money laundering (i.e. Bank Secrecy Act, US PATRIOT Act, etc.).
- Adheres to Bank policies and procedures and completes required training.
- Identifies and reports suspicious activity.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field required An advanced degree is preferred
EXPERIENCE
- 7+ years of experience spanning technical architecture, application development, or operations, with a strong emphasis on back-end development and integration required
- Extensive experience in enterprise application architecture, platform engineering, or solution architecture in large, complex environments (financial services preferred) required
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, microservices, API design, event-driven architectures, and integration patterns required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong hands-on knowledge of integration and platform technologies such as MuleSoft, Boomi, Kafka, Azure Integration Services, or equivalent.
- Solid understanding of cloud platforms (Azure/AWS), DevOps pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automation principles.
- Demonstrated ability to create detailed low-level designs and guide engineering teams through implementation.
- Strong understanding of security, compliance, and regulatory requirements relevant to banking.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
