| Essential Job Duties |
The Bezos Center Lab Manager will oversee the Center's laboratory operations to support research and development in cell-cultivated, fermentation-made, and plant-based food protein production. In this role you will ensure that lab spaces operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all regulatory standards. Additionally, you will coordinate equipment procurement, setup, and maintenance, manage lab resources, and work closely with the Director, researchers, students, and partners to facilitate experiments in a collaborative and safe environment.
Key Responsibilities fall within the following functional areas:
Lab Operations & Equipment Management:
- Oversee daily lab operations, manage access, and ensure smooth functioning of research spaces.
- Coordinate acquisition, installation, and maintenance of lab equipment, including BSL-2 cell culture systems, fermenters/bioreactors, and analytical instruments.
- Manage inventory of lab supplies and consumables, coordinating timely ordering and restocking.
Safety Compliance & Protocols:
- Develop, implement, and enforce safety plans and laboratory protocols.
- Ensure compliance with university and regulatory standards (EHS, OSHA, EPA) and maintain data integrity and confidentiality.
Training & Technical Support:
- Train and guide lab users on safety practices, laboratory techniques, and equipment use.
- Assist researchers with experiment preparation, execution, and provide technical support for design and data analysis.
Liaison & Facility Coordination:
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Center and University facilities.
- Address lab concerns, coordinate renovations, and ensure maintenance or work orders are completed.

| Other Responsibilities |
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there will be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties, such as;
- Manage and submit the annual Capital Asset Management (CAMS) equipment inventory required by NC State University.
- Ensure compliance with fire equipment codes and support facility inspections.
- Support Center events, workforce development activities, and outreach/extension initiatives

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, biotechnology/biomanufacturing, food science, or a closely related field two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from accredited universities.

| Other Required Qualifications |
- Strong knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and sustainable lab practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and professional communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks or projects effectively, meet critical deadlines, and prioritize workflow.
- Exceptional organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
- Significant hands-on experience with cell culture and biotechnology hardware and software.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Graduate degree in engineering, biotechnology/biomanufacturing, food science, or a closely related field.
- 5 years of handson laboratory management experience, including oversight of daily lab operations, equipment acquisition and maintenance, safety compliance (EHS/OSHA/EPA), inventory control, and coordination of facility needs within an academic or research environment.
- Proven ability to acquire, set up, and maintain large laboratory equipment.
- Background in sustainable protein or food research, such as plant-based proteins, cultured meat, or fermentation.
- Work history in the biotechnology or food industry.
