Overview

Salary Range: $105,628-$185,582

The Corporate Counsel provides expert legal guidance on workforce matters, handling employment law compliance, policy development, training, investigations, dispute resolution (like harassment/discrimination), and managing related litigation, all while partnering closely with HR and business leadership to mitigate risk and support business goals. Counsel will draft/review employment contracts, manage terminations, and stay updated on labor laws, offering proactive legal strategy to protect the company. Counsel will work within a diverse business partner team and support the management of commercial, regulatory, governance and compliance risk matters.



Responsibilities

    Litigation and dispute management: Oversee all aspects of employment litigation, including managing external and internal investigations, and defending against lawsuits and agency charges.
  • Legal advice and counseling: Provide strategic legal counsel to internal clients on a wide range of employment issues, such as hiring, performance management, terminations, leaves of absence, and employee relations.
  • Compliance: Ensure the company complies with federal, state (including California), and local employment laws and regulations.
  • ERISA Compliance: Support fiduciary and legal management of ERISA and non-ERISA benefit programs.
  • Policy and document drafting: Draft, review, and update employment-related documents like employment contracts, policies, and other agreements.
  • Training: Develop and conduct training for managers and employees on employment law topics, including harassment and discrimination prevention.
  • Risk management: Assess and mitigate legal risks related to employment matters.
  • Experience with specific claims: Experience handling class/collective actions or PAGA matters is often preferred.
  • General Legal Matters: Support general legal projects to ensure timely delivery of quality legal advice and service to support internal clients on a broad range of domestic and international legal issues, including employment law related issues and queries, data privacy, records management, general corporate issues, commercial and operational matters, real estate matters, customer and vendor contracting.
  • M&A Support: Advise on employment law aspects during mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate transactions.


Qualifications

  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Bar admission: Current, active license and good standing with the State Bar of California, or being eligible for California Registered In-House Counsel status.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in labor and employment law, either at a law firm or in-house. Experience with California employment law is critical.
  • Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently to achieve company goals. A pragmatic and commercial approach to problem-solving is required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • JD degree from accredited law school and currently admitted to practice law in at least one (1) state within the U.S., California preferred;
  • Subject matter expertise in employment law, particularly California employment law and employment litigation, required;
  • 3+ years of legal experience with a private law firm and/or corporate law department;
  • Knowledge of maritime law, real estate leases, mergers and acquisitions and general litigation experience are each a plus;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to clearly and concisely describe complex legal issues to business clients;
  • Collaborative, with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others;
  • Position is subject to our hybrid work policy. Proximity to Torrance, Long Beach or Inland Empire, California locations preferred.
