The Tableau Qt & AI Platform team is at the core of our multi-platform strategy. We are responsible for building and maintaining a highly customized version of the Qt framework that powers the core Tableau experience across Desktop, Server, and Cloud. Our mission is to ensure seamless performance and deep integration of Tableau's visual analytics.

Additionally, our team leads Tableau's AI evolution by building the LLM Gateway that supports Tableau Agents. These agents totally revolutionize the analytics experience, empowering users to create complex visualizations and extract deep insights from their data through natural interaction. This high-traffic infrastructure powers the seamless integration of our Java-based microservices with modern frontend experiences to define the future of data exploration.

Role Description

As a Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS), you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the foundation of Tableau while driving its future in AI. This role is approximately 80% Backend and 20% Frontend, requiring a highly adaptable engineer who can seamlessly navigate between complex C++ systems engineering and modern, scalable Java microservices.

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of Tableau-specific Qt customizations-including building and managing complex third-party libraries from source-while simultaneously architecting the Spring-based LLM Gateway that powers our new AI Agents.

Key Responsibilities

  • System Architecture & Maintenance: Design and maintain Tableau-specific customizations for the Qt framework across Mac, Windows and Linux. Lead the building, patching, and management of complex third-party C++ libraries from source to ensure cross-platform parity and performance.

  • AI Service Development: Design and implement high-performance features within our Spring-based Java microservices (LLM Gateway) to support Tableau Agents.

  • Full Stack Execution: Build robust backend APIs in Java and integrate them with modern frontend experiences using React and TypeScript.

  • CI/CD & DevOps: Own and optimize CI/CD pipelines to handle the unique challenges of C++ compilation and microservice deployment. Utilize Python for automation and scripting within our build and deployment infrastructure

  • Service Ownership: Drive technical excellence across the Tableau and modern services, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security.

  • Collaboration: Work in a Hybrid Engineering model, partnering with Product Managers, Architects, and UX to deliver end-to-end features.

  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and code reviews for other engineers on the Scrum team to ensure high-quality, maintainable code.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software development experience in an enterprise environment.

  • C++ Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of C++ for building and integrating core application logic and managing library dependencies.

  • Java Expertise: Deep experience building scalable microservices using Java and the Spring framework.

  • Frontend Fundamentals: Proficiency in React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies.

  • Library Management: Hands-on experience building and managing complex third-party libraries from source..

  • Scripting & Automation: Proficiency in Python for managing and enhancing CI/CD pipelines.

  • Database Skills: Working knowledge of relational databases (SQL) and the ability to navigate complex schemas. Experience managing data flows between modern UI settings and backends to support application configuration and authentication flows.

  • Software Engineering Fundamentals: Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, multithreading, and system design.

  • Education: A related technical degree (CS, EE, or equivalent) is required.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with LLM integration and building gateways for AI Agents.

  • Familiarity with Tableau Desktop, Server, and Cloud architectures.

  • Proficiency in modern CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub) and build systems (Bazel, CMake).

  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems using log analysis, crash dumps, and performance profiling tools.

The typical base salary range for this position is $148,500 - $223,900 annually. In select cities within the San Francisco and New York City metropolitan area, the base salary range for this role is $178,900 - $246,000 annually. The range represents base salary only, and does not include company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity or benefits, as applicable.
