The Department of Nursing at MSU Denver is dedicated to preparing compassionate, skilled, and culturally responsive nurses who are equipped to meet the complex healthcare needs of diverse communities. Position Summary

The part-time Nursing Program Tutor and Retention Specialist supports the academic and personal success of students in the nursing program by providing proactive, individualized, and group-based support services. The Specialist works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student services to foster academic success, address barriers to progression, and improve overall program retention and completion rates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 academic tutoring for nursing students in core content areas (e.g., pharmacology, fundamentals, medical-surgical, and NCLEX prep).
  • Facilitate group tutoring sessions and exam review workshops aligned with course content and student needs.
  • Organize and lead interactive study sessions focused on active learning strategies (e.g., case studies, concept mapping, clinical judgment exercises).
  • Track student performance data to identify at-risk students early and initiate supportive interventions.
  • Collaborate with faculty to offer targeted remediation and learning support aligned with course objectives.
  • Connect students with wraparound services such as counseling, financial aid, childcare, transportation assistance, and food security resources.
  • Develop and maintain academic success plans in partnership with students, setting realistic goals, and tracking progress.
  • Support students with time management, test-taking strategies, study skills, and emotional resilience for high-stakes testing environments.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, academic advisors, and student support services.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of support provided and submit retention reports as requested.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of orientation programs, early alert systems, and peer mentoring initiatives.
  • Promote a supportive, inclusive, and growth-oriented culture that values student persistence and professional development.
  • Participate in faculty department meetings
  • Participate on department committees that focus on retention and retention efforts.
Skills and Competencies
  • Student-centered, compassionate approach to education
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive teaching practices
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online scheduling tools
  • Understanding of holistic student development and retention models in nursing education
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Active, unencumbered RN license
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience
  • Experience in tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or academic support roles
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or doctorate in nursing or related field
  • Experience working in a nursing education or academic support environment
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), simulation tools, and NCLEX prep resources
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or other languages spoken by the student population

Schedule Information
  • Part-time, temporary hourly position
  • 20 hrs/week
  • This position involves a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings or weekends to accommodate student availability.
  • Work will occur in person on campus and via virtual platforms

Salary

The hourly rate is $54.00/hr.

This is a temporary, part-time hourly position that is not eligible for benefits.
