Summary: Responsible for maintaining all painted and stained, interior and exterior finishes, in all buildings, structures and assets. Major emphasis is given to the exterior of historical buildings and to wooden structures and assets which are exposed to the elements year-round.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspects buildings and structures and initiates work orders to maintain interior and exterior finishes of buildings dating from 1847 to the present, on a National Historical Registered site. May require glazing windows, patching plaster walls, scraping, sanding and washing surfaces before they receive a primer and topcoat of paint.
- Tapes and finishes drywall.
- Assess the overall assignment to safely and successfully complete the task; considers factors such as cost of materials, longevity of repairs, scheduling, safety while performing work and for surrounding staff and visitors, resource conservation and green purchasing, and staff availability.
- Installs cove molding, wallpaper, ceiling tiles and various signs and lettering.
- Cleaning and sealing of numerous teak benches, tables and chairs.
- Paints surfaces with brushes, spray guns, or paint rollers. Operates conventional and airless paint sprayers, power washers, scaler, ladders and ladder jacks, and various types and sizes of lift equipment including 65' articulated boom lifts.
- Purchases and/or tints paint and other products to match existing colors and finishes. Initial considerations should be given to the choice of products used to comply with the Garden's green purchasing policy and are safe to use in buildings and around all staff and visitors. Must keep accurate electronic records of all paint colors and finishes applied personally and by all contracted painters performing new construction or renovations.
- Considers weather conditions related to the dryness of the material to be painted, the drying time of the products applied, and the ware factor and cost of the product selected.
- Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and supplies.
- Assists other trades as required and participates in set up of major festivals and special events.
- Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level.
- Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them.
- Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards.
- Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
- May be asked to perform other tasks not solely related to painting.
- Meets expected attendance guidelines.
- Follows and adheres to established policies and procedures, including but not limited to Employee Handbook, Garden Safety Guidelines and Department Policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. However, at times, individual may monitor and direct job duties for contract painters working on site and/or other garden staff who may be assigned to assist on large projects or events.

Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum four (4) years technical background and six (6) years related work experience.
- Must possess a developed knowledge of painting means and methods and a willingness to keep up with changes in the painting industry.
- Knowledge of the construction methods of historic and contemporary building and structures preferred.
- Must be able to stage jobs. This involves laying down tarps to protect surround surfaces, cording off work zone, using ladders, scaffolding and personal lifts and avoiding damage to living trees and plants.
- Must keep accurate painting records.
- Awareness of hazards associated with asbestos, lead based paint and other chemicals.
- Demonstrates highest level of professional and ethical conduct.
- Must be willing to adjust scheduled projects because of weather conditions.
- Scheduling flexibility that allows for painting outside of normally scheduled business hours is occasionally required.
- Working knowledge of safe operation procedures for various types of maintenance equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.
- Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.

Education:

Computer Skills:
- Able to use Internet to search for new products and/or methods and to obtain manufactures' literature and required (sds) safety data sheets.
- Ability to close out work orders and keep electronic records is a plus.
- Familiarity navigating through various PC applications including, but not restricted to Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, etc.).

- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information to effectively execute and achieve results.
Mathematical Skills:
- H.S. basic math required to determine amount of products required to cover a given amount of surface or items.

- Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean insurable driving record (prior to employment).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid chauffeur's license within (2) months of hire date is required.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights and to operate a wide variety of personal lift equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time during all seasons of the year.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including fall restraint and respirators as needed.
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and work with various pieces of equipment off ladders and/or lifts and over head.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 95% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
- Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).
Work Environment:
- Exposure to chemicals, working on scaffolding and lift equipment and using tools and painting equipment over head and in all weather conditions.
- Working around general construction conditions.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
- Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner; answering questions regarding the Garden and its operations.
