Target hiring range for this position will be between $84,000.00-$88,400 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

About the Position/Role Summary:

Northwestern seeks an Internal Auditor to play a pivotal role in helping the University identify and mitigate risk.

Reporting directly to the Director of Internal Audit, the Internal Auditor will execute multiple audits for Northwestern, including: planning, developing, testing, gathering data and documentation; preparing, supporting workpapers; and managing project deadlines. This position will compile audit results and evaluate risks in order to make recommendations to University leadership, including corrective actions, improvement of various processes and procedures, and implementation of compliance and financial controls.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Draft scope memo, work program, and test procedures for audit projects including draft meeting agendas. Execute the preparation of and review supporting workpapers. Prepare detailed, clearly labeled workpapers that record and summarize data on the assigned audit projects through interviews, observation, and inquiry which could include flowcharts, procedural memoranda, etc. Perform audit steps in established programs to evaluate adequacy of controls. Obtain, analyze, and appraise transactions, documents, records, reports, and methods that evidence the efficiency and effectiveness of controls over the process, system, or activity under audit. Collect and analyze sufficient competent evidence to form conclusions. Prepare discussion notes, including audit exceptions, to be used in discussions with financial and/or operating management. Draft reports and facilitate internal reviews.

  • Generate objective, practical approaches for improving operating effectiveness and efficiency. Identify enhancements to the audit procedures throughout the audit.

  • Discuss findings and recommendations with appropriate financial and/or operational executives. Ascertain that any recommendations proposed are effective and reasonable.

  • Edit audit findings and recommendations based on results of the audit and discussions with management.

  • Review responses to audit reports and track follow-up action to ensure recommendations have been appropriately addressed.

  • Keep the project lead (senior auditor, director, or others) informed of all significant matters in assigned projects.

  • Execute audit approach for special projects.

  • Gain and maintain a thorough understanding of and compliance with Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in accounting, finance, or another related field
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant business experience with an audit focus

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Strong leadership; self-starter, takes initiative, with an analytical approach including problem solving skills
  • Ability to facilitate teamwork and cooperation at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • CPA and/or CIA certification
  • Minimum 1-3 years of internal audit experience with a higher education institution or public accounting firm

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Experience managing education compliance or regulatory testing.
