POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing quality customer oriented laboratory services including specimen collection, specimen processing and related specialized procedures, and service to effectively communicate information to users. Performs Phlebotomy, EKGs, and other related duties. Laboratory Support Technician also assist with providing training and guidance to less experienced laboratory support technicians.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Phlebotomy


  • Stocks phlebotomy workstations and trays with essential supplies.
  • Positively identifies all patients and specimens to eliminate mislabeling risks.
  • Performs venipunctures according to NCCLS specifications.
  • Labels specimens according to procedures.
  • Collects timed specimens according to procedures.

  • Collects blood cultures according to policies and procedures.

EKG

  • Stocks ACC3 EKG workstation with essential supplies.
  • Attends training on EKG procedures as required.
  • Positively identifies all patients and reports to eliminate mislabeling risks.
  • Performs outpatient EKGs according to procedure at the ACC3 draw station.

Specimen Processing


  • Understands study protocols and processes specimens accordingly.
  • Prepares the workstation with all essential supplies to ensure smooth processing of specimens.
  • Receives and verifies identification of specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Distributes specimens to appropriate lab sections with in specific time frames.
  • Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, and follows all special handling instructions.
  • Processes, prepares, and stores specimens for sendout to reference laboratories.

  • Processes random and 24 hour urine specimens.
  • Monitors and records daily temperatures and performs scheduled maintenance of equipment.

Customer Service and Communication

  • Communicates and cooperates to improve patient services and the quality of each patient's experience.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with patients, staff members, and phone customers.
  • Establishes positive, professional relationships with coworkers and managers to enhance the efficient operation of the department.
  • Delivers reports in a timely fashion.
  • Respects and follows BMC's rules of confidentiality.
  • Consistently follows through and conveys accurate information .
  • Answers the telephone according to department policy and procedure.
  • Completes all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting, and communicates to supervisor.
  • Incorporates Medical Center Values into all undertakings.

Teamwork


  • Manages time appropriately and meets BMC standards for attendance and punctuality.
  • Acts as a representative and ambassador of Laboratory Medicine at the patient care units.
  • Follows department guidelines for dress code.
  • Documents activities related to Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Assists in the pickup and delivery of specimens.
  • Attends department meetings or reviews minutes and documents the review.

  • Performs special procedures as requested by supervisors, assistants, and specialists.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Information Systems


  • Utilizes technical training and acquires in-depth knowledge of the Sunquest LIS and its functions.
  • Performs Sunquest order/entry, inquiry, crediting, and other basic LIS functions.
  • Performs patient registration functions in SDK, including information updates, and assigns medical record numbers.
  • Ensures current information in the master patient index.

Training


  • Assists in training new lab support technicians and plebotomy students.
  • Commits to self-development by attending one BMC training session per year.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or GED.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

One year of Phlebotomy, EKG, and/or specimen processing experience preferred

Compensation Range:

$20.12- $26.02
