Overview

The General Utility Worker (GUW) is an entry-level role at Con Edison's Astoria Transformer Shop, located in Astoria Queens. The primary responsibility is to learn and perform mechanical and electrical maintenance tasks, including reconditioning transformers, network protectors, and other critical equipment. This position also involves hands-on field work with a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist with mechanical and electrical maintenance tasks in the transformer shop.
  • Learn and perform reconditioning of transformers, network protectors, and related components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Perform physically demanding activities, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Follow all safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Obtain required certifications and licenses.
  • Provide excellent customer service and represent the company positively.
  • Work overtime, off-hours, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incorporate Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools into daily work.
  • Support a culture of safety, diversity, operational excellence, cost management, and customer experience.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
Relevant Work Experience
  • Mechanical and/or electrical aptitude is preferred
  • Ability to learn and perform tasks involving hand and power tools, machine shop tools, and standard maintenance functions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous maintenance or shop experience is a plus.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: NYS/NYC Asbestos Handler's 1 Year Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
