THE POSITION

Internships with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources offer a dynamic and enriching experience for students eager to deepen their understanding of environmental stewardship. These positions allow interns to actively participate in various initiatives aimed at preserving and managing the state's rich natural resources, ensuring their availability for both current and future generations. Interns will have the chance to engage in hands-on projects, collaborate with experienced professionals, and contribute to meaningful conservation efforts. This immersive experience not only enhances their academic knowledge but also equips them with practical skills that are invaluable in the field of environmental science and resource management.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will play a crucial role in conducting records research at county courthouses, which involves examining deeds, tax maps, and other pertinent documents to support boundary surveys and legal proceedings. You will also be an integral part of a survey crew engaged in fieldwork aimed at establishing Commonwealth boundaries. Your responsibilities will include tasks such as clearing brush to ensure line-of-sight access, measuring distances with tools like tape measures, electronic distance measurement (EDM) devices, or total stations, and determining directions using magnetic compasses. Additionally, you will utilize survey-grade GPS technology, including Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and static methods, to accurately establish locations. Your efforts will extend to boundary marking and staking, as well as the organization and management of files and databases. Furthermore, you will assist in the creation of shapefiles through GIS software, such as ArcGIS or Carlson GIS, enhancing the overall efficiency and accuracy of the surveying process.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship that will run from 5/1/2026 through 8/28/2026
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on a schedule that aligns with their supervisor, so they are in the office on the same days. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Current full-time enrollment in a two-year degree, bachelor's degree or advanced degree program in one of the following majors:
    • Surveying Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
  • An approved major course which includes a qualifying 24 credit hours of study in the physical, biological and environmental sciences may be acceptable.
  • Freshman year completed by May 2026
  • Good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher).
  • Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must possess a valid driver's license which is not under suspension
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
