Primary Purpose

The Dental Assistant Supervisor supervises, organizes, and coordinates the clinical and technical aspects of dental assistant functions to ensure the delivery of high-quality dental services. Works under minimum supervision to provide a wide variety of duties requiring advanced technical, clerical, patient care, and organizational skills to assist in providing treatment to patients. Recruits, trains, coaches, and motivates the dental assistants.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduated from a Dental Assistant Program preferred.

Experience
- Must have minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Dental Assistant.
- Leadership responsibilities experience preferred.

Equivalent Education and/or Experience
- May have an equivalent experience to substitute for the education requirements.

Certification/Registration/Licensure
- Must have current Dental Assistant registration with Texas State Board of Dental.
- Examiners, Radiology, Jurisprudence and Infection Control (RDA) Certification.
- Prefer Certified Dental Assistant Certification.
- Must be certified in Dental Radiography.
- Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Provider certification from one of the following:
- American Heart Association
- American Red Cross
- Military Training Network

Skills or Special Abilities
- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, hospital staff and the general public.
- Must have the ability to work effectively as part of a team and to lead, coach and support supervise the dental assistants.
- Must be able to interact with co-workers and patients to expedite and organize patient care.
- Must able to ensure appropriate staff assignments to cover multiple providers and their individual needs.
- Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of dental assisting techniques, equipment, taking radiographs, instruments and environment of care requirements.
- Must be able to perform work tasks for moderate complexity involving independent decisions concerning adherence to policy, sequence of work or similar matters of daily requirements of job.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in meeting age related and handicapped patients' needs.
- Must have strong technical, clerical, record reporting, patient care, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

1. Selects, trains, motivates, supervises, evaluates assigned staff behaviors and performance to ensure maximum utilization.

2. Promotes adherence by other personnel to all policies and procedures, and nationally recognized standards of practice.

3. Creates staffing assignments as established with the department guidelines to meet productivity targets as appropriate. Revise assignments during the shift and make changes as necessary to meet specific needs to patients on a shift-by-shift basis

4. Works with lead dentist to maintain and standardize practice standards and workflows across all dental service areas in Population Health

5. Demonstrates due diligence in effective problem solving by collaborating with staff to ensure effective resolution of identified issues. Intervenes and problem solves for inter/intra- departmental issues, facilitating interdepartmental communication, negotiation, and decision-making. Utilizes chain of command for unresolved or escalating issues as needed. Advocates for patients and staff to provide for safe delivery of care and/or a safe environment of care.

6. Coordinates personal self-scheduling to maintain appropriate coverage for department needs. Demonstrates scheduling flexibility and willingly provides coverage during shifts when staffing crisis/shortage occurs.

7. Maintains direct care clinical competencies and performs all dental assistant functions (intake assessment, radiographs ,room cleaning, assisting procedures ) as needed during active schedules.

8. Monitors, orders clinic supplies as well as coordinates instrument sterilization with Sterile Processing Department and supply chain to assure inventory on hand for dental service.

9. Stays current with the latest development trends in dental assistance by attending in-service seminars and workshops and reading internal publications, integrating knowledge gained into current work practices.

10. Actively participates in routine and special staff meetings, special projects and the development, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement activities.
