Senior Civil Engineer

Overview:

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft's cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. The Senior Civil Engineer will serve as a Civil Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) for data center programming, design development, design, construction administration, renovations, retrofits, master planning, site due diligence, and operations-related technical design guidance and support. This position will provide civil engineering technical direction and oversight for AMERS-region data center designs and will engage with key Microsoft stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and external A/E consultant teams and general contractors that specialize in data center designs and builds to ensure that Microsoft's data center civil engineering and site infrastructure design and quality standards are met. The successful candidate will provide civil engineering technical direction, oversight, and design and construction review for new data center campus designs, builds, leases, retrofits, and renovations in addition to technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning and permitting.

The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for thefacilitation and deliveryof Microsoft's industry-leading data centerdesigns including the development of innovative technology and advanced civil engineering and sustainable design concepts to be used as the basis for current and next generation data center designs, retrofits, and renovations. This role will provide technical direction, decision-making, and overall technical leadershipfor all civil engineering aspects of Microsoft's data center portfolio.

Core Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with internal Microsoft and external stakeholders to provide civil engineering technical direction to deliver projects aligned with defined civil engineering, site and infrastructure design and performance criteria within scope, schedule, and budget.

• Possess exceptionalcommunication, organization, and leadership skills.

• Expert civil engineering, site, utility and infrastructure designproficiencyin commercial and industrial architecture andengineeringwith a primary focus on mission critical data center campus design.

• Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-pacedenvironmentand do sowith an even temperament and a results-oriented collaborative manner.

• Must be a person of integrity,bemethodical and detailed-orientedwith a strongwork ethic.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical civil engineering design experience.

• OR Master's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience.

• OR Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

• Experience working in mission critical and working knowledge on land acquisition, site master planning, permitting and development.

• Candidate have the experience and the ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical design approaches and decisions.

• English fluency required, Spanish, Portuguese, or French language proficiency a plus.
• Professional Engineering License in Civil Engineering is required.
• 5-years' experience participating on civil engineering design teams for large scale critical facilities and infrastructure development projects with multi-disciplinary teams of architects and engineers.
• Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced civil engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large hyperscale data centers and campus environments.
• Experience in navigating in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Sketchup, Bluebeam, BIM 360, and Autodesk Construction Cloud software for drawing review and development of conceptual level master plans during site selection and early design phases.
• Provide civil engineering technical oversight for site selection and due diligence efforts with external and internal stakeholders.
• Candidate must possess written and verbal communication skills.
• Able to travel domestically and internationally.

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
