Role Summary: Reporting to the Purchasing Supervisor, the Commodity Buyer is responsible for the procurement of commodities for distribution following company procedures and practices. It will require a blend of skills and experience focused on price negotiation, knowledge of commodity markets, procurement and inventory control of thousands of SKU's at 42 branches. The Buyer will set and define proper inventory levels and ensure reasonable turns based on sales. The Commodity Buyer must possess a sound knowledge of procurement procedures and technical knowledge of the items purchased.

Exciting work you will do: The essential duties and responsibilities of the Commodity Buyer position will consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Stay informed about market trends, pricing fluctuations, and potential suppliers for their assigned commodities
  • Negotiate the best possible price and terms with suppliers, using their extensive knowledge of the market and their strong negotiation skills
  • Maintain positive relationship with vendors and regional rep agencies
  • Assemble purchase orders
  • Use computer data to record, edit and control the purchasing process
  • Update Pricing in ERP system
  • Assist Sales Department with inventory related inquiries
  • Review inventory turns and surplus and make order point adjustments as needed
  • Perform credit adjustments
  • Review stagnant inventory and work with sales team and vendors to find creative ways to turn
  • Support and back up the purchasing department
  • Part number description review and clean up
  • Other duties as assigned

What you'll need:

  • Experience: 5 years' industry sales or procurement experience; strong understanding of financial markets
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business, supply chain management or equivalent work experience
  • Analytics/Computer Skills: Ability to use standard office equipment, proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel; strong analytical skills; understand how inventory calculations work; understand inventory forecasting and modeling
  • Organization Skills: Excellent communication and negotiation skills; ability to multi-task and shift priorities as needed; ability to work in fast-paced, continuously evolving environment; ability to prioritize, document processes and track progress
  • Cross-functional skills: Self-motivated; strong phone presence and listening skills
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate well with all levels of the organization; manage supplier relationships

Qualifications we prefer but don't require:

  • Experience: 3 years' experience with Eclipse ERP; experience in the specific industry and commodities being purchased is a plus
