What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an experienced Hazardous Material Packaging Specialist to ensure that our department's operations align with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Sandia National Laboratories requirements for hazardous materials management, shipping, storage, handling, and transportation. This role will be critical in maintaining compliance and ensuring the safe and efficient handling of hazardous materials, which is essential for the success of our projects and the mission.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Work with customers to establish shipping requirements and schedules.
  • Provide packing instructions to prepare hazardous materials for shipment, including marking, labelling, and container selection.
  • Oversee packaging activities to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Signs legal shipping documentation on behalf of Sandia National Laboratories.
  • Provides guidance and direction to internal customers for the safe and compliant shipment of items.
  • Ensures safe compliant shipping of radiological materials.
  • Ability to collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$85,100 - $164,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field, plus five (5) or more years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experienced in the following:
    • Interpret federal, state, and local hazardous material standards and regulations.
    • Management of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

  • Experience in hazardous material management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control, or transportation.
  • Knowledge of safety basis processes and implementation in hazardous material management.
  • In-depth knowledge of explosive, nuclear, or radiological material compatibility requirements.
About Our Team

Department 4761 - Enabling Sandia's Mission by providing technical review and packaging design of classified/unclassified hazardous material moves, e.g., radioactive, explosive, nuclear. The department and associated programs facilitate hazardous material transport made via commercial transportation operations including specialty shipments involving the Office of Secure Transportation (OST) while adhering to DOE, DOT, and OST requirements. Provides specialized packaging and labeling of hazardous materials to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient packaging, handling, and transportation of hazardous materials. Meet all shipping regulations that apply to air, ground, vessel and military transport.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
