Senior Editorial, Assignment, and AI Manager

AccuWeather is looking for a Senior Editorial, Assignment, and AI Manager to lead daily editorial operations while also serving as a hands-on contributor. This role blends newsroom leadership, assignment management, and AI-driven innovation. Along with overseeing pitches, assignments, and editorial standards, this person will regularly write, edit, and pitch stories to support coverage needs and drive performance.

The Senior Manager will guide a team of writers and producers, review and approve scripts, coordinate severe weather reporting, and support the Director's editorial vision. They will also help shape AccuWeather's developing AI workflows and train staff on responsible use.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial Leadership



  • Lead editorial direction for AccuWeather.com, prioritizing severe weather and high-interest weather-adjacent stories across lifestyle, travel, business, climate, and health.
  • Write and edit stories on a regular basis, contributing to breaking news, enterprise features, and evergreen content.
  • Pitch new ideas daily and help elevate the overall pitch quality across the team.
  • Review, edit, and approve scripts and articles, ensuring clarity, accuracy, strong framing, and alignment with the Director's guidance.
  • Mentor writers and producers, helping strengthen story development, structure, and performance-focused storytelling.
  • Oversee homepage and category programming to maximize visibility and engagement.
  • Collaborate with PR, Push, Video, and Product teams to align messaging, scheduling, and distribution.
  • Use real-time performance metrics and SEO insights to refine headlines, angles, and coverage decisions.
  • Provide voiceovers for select videos when appropriate, ensuring tone and clarity fit the platform and audience.


Assignment Desk & Workflow Oversight



  • Act as the central point of contact for all incoming pitches from MMJs, broadcasters, writers, and editors.
  • Approve, deny, or refine pitches, giving clear direction on what's needed to move forward.
  • Assign stories based on urgency, expertise, visuals, and team bandwidth.
  • Manage daily workflow, ensuring strong coordination during both routine content cycles and major weather events.
  • Work with video teams to align scripts, visuals, and production timelines, providing editorial approval ahead of final edits.
  • Step in to write or edit breaking news coverage when needed to maintain speed and accuracy.


AI Content Strategy & Innovation



  • Develop guidelines, training materials, and ethical standards for AI-assisted research, writing, and production.
  • Build and maintain AI workflows that increase efficiency while upholding AccuWeather's accuracy and trust standards.
  • Train staff to use AI tools effectively and responsibly.
  • Partner with Editorial, Tech, and Product leadership to integrate AI into broader organizational goals.
  • Monitor industry trends and refine AccuWeather's AI strategy to stay ahead of the curve.



QUALIFICATIONS



  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.
  • 7-9 years of digital editorial experience, including writing, editing, story assignment, and newsroom leadership.
  • Strong experience approving/denying pitches, assigning stories, and shaping editorial angles.
  • Proven track record of writing and editing high-performing digital content.
  • Experience reviewing video scripts and working closely with producers and broadcasters.
  • Comfortable providing on-camera or voiceover narration for digital videos.
  • Familiarity with meteorology or strong interest in weather and climate storytelling.
  • Skilled in WordPress or similar CMS, Google Analytics, Parse.ly, and SEO best practices.
  • Proven experience with AI tools and workflows in a content environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and quickly shift priorities.
