Job Overview:

The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a Medical Director for Prescribing and Pain Management Licensure matters. This executive service position reports directly to the Assistant Commissioner of Health Licensure and Regulation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The medical director will be responsible for reviewing all complaints filed against licensees involving the inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances.
  • This review will include, but not be limited to making threshold determinations on violations; advising board investigators in conjunction with the Office of General Counsel; performing detailed review of medical charts; and consulting with the Office of General Counsel in issuing positions on appropriate disciplinary parameters.
  • The medical director will also be responsible for initial pain clinic licensure and renewals and assist the Controlled Substance Monitoring Database (CSMD) Committee in utilizing CSMD information to comply with legislative mandates to identify prescribers with inappropriate prescribing practices.
  • The medical director will interact with the Board of Medical Examiners, Board of Nursing, Board of Pharmacy, and other applicable boards concerning prescribing as well as working with the Office of General Counsel to advise on the promulgation of rules.
  • In addition, the medical director will collaborate with other state departments with regard to the misuse of controlled substances and conduct literature reviews/research to inform policy relative to prescribing. The medical director will supervise the APRN prescribing consultant and the pain clinic licensure team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed and practicing for at least 5 years as a medical doctor or osteopathic physician in Tennessee.
  • Experience in prescribing controlled substances. Certified Addiction Specialist (Preferred). Certified Pain Management Specialist (Preferred).
