Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer with strong expertise in COBOL and PL/I to join our team supporting the State Farm Payment Plan (SFPP) mainframe system. This critical legacy system comprises just under 10,000 components and requires ongoing maintenance and enhancement for the next 5-6 years before it is fully sunset.

The ideal candidate will quickly ramp up on this vast system and sustain knowledge and expertise to ensure smooth operations as other engineers retire. While SFPP will eventually be retired, opportunities exist within State Farm for continued mainframe work or transition into web-based software engineering with our team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance the SFPP mainframe payment system using COBOL and PL/I.
  • Manage and modify nearly 10,000 system components to ensure continued reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with team members to understand system architecture and business requirements.
  • Support database management using DB2, SQL, IMS, and develop stored procedures as needed.
  • Use JCL for job scheduling and batch processing.
  • Utilize Git for source code management and version control.
  • Document changes and contribute to knowledge transfer to prepare for system sunset.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing and mentoring as other team members transition or retire.
  • Optionally, engage in learning and applying web-based software engineering skills as opportunities arise.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proficient in COBOL and PL/I programming languages.
  • Strong experience with DB2, SQL, IMS, JCL, and Stored Procedures.
  • Familiarity with Git or similar version control systems.
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand large, complex mainframe systems.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience supporting legacy billing and payment systems is a strong plus.
  • Commitment to stay in this role for up to 5 years to provide continuity and expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working within State Farm or a similar insurance/financial services environment.
  • Experience with mainframe system modernization or migration projects.
  • Interest in expanding skills towards web-based software development.

SPONSORSHIP: Applicants for this position are required to be eligible to lawfully work in the U.S. immediately; employer will not sponsor applicants for U.S. work authorization (e.g. H-1B visa) for this opportunity.
