Summary:
Spoken Language Interpreters facilitate health related communication in spoken languages between Health Care Providers (HCPs) and Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients. Spoken Language Interpreters help to ensure that patients receive understandable and respectful care that is in keeping with their cultural health beliefs, practices and primary language.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: High School diploma or equivalent; bachelor's degree preferred. Completion of a 40-hour medical interpreter training program required within 6 months of hire, with preference for 100-hour training preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: N/A
  3. Experience: 1 year experience in medical interpretation preferred. Related experience in medical or social services fields is preferred (CNA, MD, RN, social work, etc.).
  4. Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Advanced knowledge of medical terminology in source and target language as evidenced by passing score on a test approved by MaineHealth Interpreter and Cross-Cultural Services and completion of 40 hour training in Medical Terminology and Interpretation required within six months of hire.
  5. Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: Native fluency or a comparable skill level in both English and the target language.
