Astrion has an exciting opportunity for an Ordinary Seaman aboard the R/V Acoustic Explorer, supporting the Navy Division. Acoustic Explorer is a NAVAIR vessel operating in Southern California in and around San Clemente Island and primarily used for the testing and evaluation of sonobuoys.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • High School Diploma.
  • 4 year's experience in deck seamanship and an MMC as either an Ordinary or Able Seaman
  • SECURITY CLEARANCE: Current U.S. Citizenship Required
  • CERTIFICATIONS: MMC as either an Ordinary or Able Seaman.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential AB, Ordinary Seaman, Unlimited Any Waters is required.
  • STCW Endorsement as Unlimited Lifeboatman.
  • Rating forming part of a navigational watch

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Seaman performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment, scales , buffs, and paints decks and superstructure, sweeps and washes deck, splices wire and rope, breaks out, rigs, overhauls and stows cargo handling gear, stationary rigging and running gear.
  • Secures cargo, launches and recovers boats, may rig and operate hydrographic and other specialty winches; handle and stow oceanographic explosives, and stage and stow beach support equipment.
  • In addition, when assigned to watch duty, this incumbent performs a variety of duties, including looking for obstructions in path of vessel, steering vessel, serving on security patrol, in standing gangway watch
  • Experience in deployment and recovery of in water equipment
  • Standing of navigational watches at sea and security watches in port.
  • Keeping the Hazardous Material Inventory and Container Logs current.
  • The cleaning and maintenance of all deck hand tools and gear
  • Maintenance of all exterior and interior surfaces. Including hull, house, decks, bulwarks, rails, overheads, stairwells, hatches, ports.
  • Maintenance of the Hurricane Rib. As well as operation, launching, recovery and repair of the Rib.
  • Maintenance of Main and auxiliary cranes and deck equipment (capstans, air tuggers, A-Frame).
  • Maintenance of deck and retrieval gear lockers.
  • Care and stowage of lines, chain, slings, wire rope, deck rigging.
  • The safeguarding of customer equipment, assisting the customers in performance of their duties and preventing injuries on deck.
  • The proper stowage of deck gear, customer equipment, dry goods, spares, consumables and supplies.
  • The maintenance of all deck air, water and hydraulic lines. Including quick disconnects, crane pendants, hoses etc.
  • Conducts cleaning and inspection tasks related to the Preventative Maintenance records.
  • Prepares cabins and interior spaces for customers, including heads, showers, bedding and bunks.
