Department Summary

Risk Management Services' programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational and financial foundation of the University of North Texas. A safe academic environment is the top priority of our department and staff members. We help identify, analyze and mitigate risks so that the UNT community can freely pursue opportunities for growth and advancement. Our staff members also work to identify, protect and conserve university resources from loss. To achieve our goals, we work together with the UNT community to help them proactively manage risks, implement preventative measures, plan for their challenges and work through any issues that occur.

Position Overview

The International Risk Control Coordinator is responsible for supporting the full scope of university international travel with a focus on identifying, analyzing, and controlling health, safety, and security exposures arising from international travel. This will include the development and maintenance of programs, projects, and procedures for the purpose of mitigating, preparing for, and responding to emergency/crisis events that impact UNT personnel while traveling internationally. Overall, the position will be responsible for monitoring and assessing international events and conditions that could pose health/safety/security concern for those traveling internationally; while also coordinating efforts to minimize exposures, and developing/carrying out response efforts when emergencies/crisis events occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and four years of related risk management experience or any combination of education, experience and training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience working in higher education risk management with focus on international risk. Experience developing international risk assessments and providing guidance to mitigate known exposures. Knowledge of National Incident Management System (NIMS), Incident Command System (ICS), and general emergency management best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing an international travel, risk, and safety program for an institution of higher education.

Job Duties



  • Manage the day to day activities of UNTs International Risk Management Program.
  • Develops policies, guidelines, procedures, etc. to address risks arising from international travel.
  • Monitors and disseminates information related to incidents, events or conditions that may impact UNT personnel traveling internationally.
  • Provides risk analysis of specific international locations prior to UNT personnel departing.
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to identify and implement risk reduction strategies for UNT international operations and activities.
  • Provides consultative services to the chair of the International Risk Oversight Committee for the purpose of vetting proposed travel to high risk international locations.
  • Maintains situational awareness for all UNT personnel traveling internationally; protectively communicating numbers and locations of personnel in specific locations for crisis response purposes
  • Produces reports to address known exposures, program effectiveness, gap analysis and future trends related to international travel; develops mitigation strategies and plans to address known exposures in moderate to high risk international locations.
  • Manage international travel requests processing and approval.
  • Conduct campus outreach events and provide training covering international travel compliance.
