Full-Time Faculty - Speech/Assistant Debate Coach

Position Overview

Teaching Introduction to Public Speaking and other SPCH courses as needed. The teaching load is approximately fifteen (15) hours per semester (4 courses per semester with a 1-course release for forensics/debate duties) in both Fall and Spring semesters. Summer, mini-term, and overload courses, as needed with optional stipend in Summer semesters for duties related to the Debate Team.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in coaching the Debate Team. The debate program at Lee College is a nationally competitive debate program that competes primarily in the IPDA (Public Debate) style and has maintained a small presence in Individual Events. The squad consists of 20+ students who travel to 10-12 tournaments annually, including national championship tournaments. Individuals with experience in competing/coaching in styles including IPDA, NPDA, CEDA/NDT, or Individual Events are encouraged to apply.
  • Qualified applicants must be committed to student learning, integrating technology into the curriculum, and encouraging engaged scholars.
    Maintain accurate student accounting records in compliance with Lee College requirements.
  • Submit required student reports to the Admissions & Records Office according to schedule.
  • Direct and evaluate the learning experience of the students in accordance with adopted curricula and approved procedures.
  • Teach assigned classes in keeping with approved syllabi, outlines, and instructional materials.
  • Provide counsel/guidance to students when there is a need.
  • All faculty members are required to be on campus thirty-five (35) hours per week, and participate in professional development activities, department and College committees, commencement, and other activities as stated in the Faculty Workload Responsibilities and Policy.
  • Faculty members may be required to teach evening, summer, online, hybrid, dual enrollment and/or weekend classes.
  • Faculty work schedule is dependent on course scheduling at Lee College, as well as dual credit scheduling. Work schedule may include some evening, Friday and weekend classes.
  • PLEASE NOTE: This position's contractual requirement for debate coaching cannot be separated from the instructional responsibilities.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

  • Travel with the Lee College Debate Team to tournaments across the nation and help prepare students for competition.
  • Debate team recruitment efforts at local high schools, in the community, and in classes across the curriculum at Lee College.
  • Help plan and administrate debate camps and practices.
  • Volunteerism in the community with speech and debate related activities including judging at oratory contests, mentoring public speaking organizations, etc.
  • Serve on college committees as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A Master's degree (or higher) in Communication Studies or Speech Communication, or have a Master's degree (or higher) with a minimum of eighteen (18) hours in speech communication.
  • Must have at least three (3) years of experience coaching and/or competing in intercollegiate forensics/debate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have at least three (3) years teaching speech communication at the college level.
  • Have at least two (2) years of experience in the IPDA (Public Debate) style.
