Job Description

Manages and has 24/7 responsibility for the nursing practice, patient care delivery, human and fiscal resources, and regulatory compliance of multiple patient care units. Assists Nursing Leadership in setting strategic direction for key programs.

Job Responsibility

1.Manages and has 24/7 responsibility for the team members, operations and patient care activities of multiple patient care units.
2.Assists nursing leadership in setting strategic direction for key programs in alignment with organization mission, vision, and values and nursing strategic plan.
3.Communicates, builds consensus, and guides teams toward achieving department objectives.
4.Promotes and maintains high quality patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
5.Creates a professional work environment that encourages team member respect, engagement, accountability and optimal patient outcomes.
6.Promotes appreciative inquiry and evidence-based, ethical and compassionate practice.
7.Acquires and manages staffing for patient care unit. Collaborates with HR for requirements.
8.Provides direction and guidance to patient care unit supervisors and managers.
9.Responsible for performance reviews, promotional decisions, pay and corrective actions for direct/indirect reports.
10.Serves as a role model for standards of professional practice (clinical, educational and leadership).
11.Assists in career development planning for team members.
12.Educates teams in new and existing department procedures and systems (information systems, fiscal responsibility, etc.).
13.Manages patient care unit budgets. Monitors expenditures and implements action plans when variances are present.
14.Monitors performance metrics that support decision-making to achieve optimal performance levels.
15.Ensures adherence to the established care delivery model, using knowledge of scope and standards of practice.
16.Facilitates continual compliance for responsible departments with the JC, CMS, New York State, DOH, Public Health Law, HIPPA regulations and System, hospital and department standards.
17.Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of clinical competencies for patient population of oversight in order to manage direct patient care.
18.Maintains current knowledge of scope and standards of practice, healthcare legislation, and population health.
19.Identifies and leads opportunities to make changes to improve operations across units using evidence-based strategies and solutions.

Job Qualification




  • Bachelors of Science Degree, required. Masters, preferred. (Bachelors or Master's Degree must be in Nursing)
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, required.
  • Specialized certifications, as needed.
  • 6-10 years of nursing experience and 5-7 years of leadership/management experience, required.
  • Oncology experience preferred
  • Leadership experience preferred
