Description

As a Survey Crew Chief, you'll lead field survey operations that keep projects accurate, compliant, and on track. From boundary surveys to construction staking, you'll be the person ensuring our data is precise, our documentation solid, and our worksite collaboration seamless. This role blends hands-on fieldwork with technical expertise - perfect for someone who enjoys being outdoors, solving problems, and leading a team toward successful project delivery.


Key Responsibilities


  • Plan and perform field surveys including boundary, topographic, as-built, subdivision, and construction layout.



  • Collect, compile, and analyze survey data from records, plats, deeds, and field measurements to produce accurate mapping and documentation.



  • Operate and maintain survey instruments such as GPS units, robotic total stations (e.g., Leica), and data collectors.



  • Lead field crews and provide guidance to survey technicians to ensure quality, safety, and efficiency on every job.



  • Review survey data and calculations to confirm compliance with project specifications, codes, and standards.



  • Prepare and deliver complete, accurate, and professional survey documentation including field notes, sketches, digital models, and reports.



  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and construction teams to ensure alignment on project requirements.



  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, and professionalism while representing KLJ in the field.



  • Stay up to date with new survey technologies, software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or Geopak), and industry practices.




Qualifications


  • High School Diploma required; Associate's degree in Surveying, Geospatial Science, or related field preferred.



  • Minimum 3 year of post-education survey experience, including work with easements, rights-of-way, plats, boundaries, property descriptions, and GPS surveys.



  • Strong understanding of land survey principles, standards, and record-keeping practices.



  • Proficiency with survey instruments and data processing software.



  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills - able to interact with both technical and non-technical partners.



  • Demonstrated self-leadership, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in the field.



  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally based on project needs.



  • Willingness to work a schedule that includes extended hours or weekends as required by field conditions.




Physical Requirements


  • Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain for extended periods (up to 10 miles per day).



  • Frequently lift and carry up to 25 lbs, occasionally up to 75 lbs.



  • Regularly required to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and communicate clearly.



  • Must have full range of vision including depth perception and color differentiation.




Work Environment

This role is 70% field-based, with approximately 30% office work. Expect to work outdoors in varying weather conditions as part of a fast-paced, collaborative team that values precision, safety, and pride in craftsmanship.
