Apply your engineering expertise to solve complex maritime challenges and strengthen U.S. Naval capabilities through innovative design and ship architecture. As a Maritime Systems Engineer Intern at APL, you'll design, test, and enhance systems that keep the U.S. Navy at the forefront of maritime technology.

We are seeking a dynamic, creative, and analytical candidate to join us for an 8-week Winter Internship and help shape the future of our Maritime Surveillance Systems. As a Maritime Systems Engineer Intern, you'll collaborate with a talented team of engineers and analysts supporting the U.S. Navy's SURTASS (Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System) program, pushing the boundaries of maritime system design and performance standards required by the fleet.

As a Maritime Systems Intern, you will...

  • Evaluate the technical appropriateness of system modernization initiatives and provide feedback and propose alternatives.
  • Review new platform development against Coast Guard and shipping industry standards to ensure solutions meet operational and technical performance needs of the US Navy.
  • Research, investigate, and experiment with next-generation analysis capabilities and look for creative applications in unconventional ways.
  • Present analysis and engineering assessments across multiple peer working groups and organizations.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Able to commence work for an 8 week internship beginning in January 2026.
  • Actively pursuing a BS in Marine Engineering, ME, EE, mathematics, physics or equivalent.
  • Have college level coursework in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related field.
  • Have operational, design, or analysis experience with the SURTASS system.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and are skilled at developing relationships across organizational teams.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Are proficient at multi-tasking, prioritizing assignments, communicating progress and meeting deadlines.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 Scale. Note: When prompted to upload attachments, please include a copy of your college transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll exceed our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have work experience in the Maritime field.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
