Job Description We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment at UL Research Institutes, based in our Evanston, IL office. The Senior Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment oversees the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive health and safety programs designed to create a safe and compliant research environment. This role ensures compliance with all relevant federal, state, and institutional safety regulations while promoting a culture of proactive risk management and employee well-being. The position relies on extensive expertise in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental health to identify, evaluate, and reduce workplace hazards within research operations. What you'll learn and achieve: As the Senior Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:
Develop, implement, and oversee safety and industrial hygiene programs customized for laboratory and research environments. Perform hazard and risk evaluations to identify potential exposures and suggest corrective measures. Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, NIH, and institutional safety and environmental standards. Lead and document incident investigations to ensure the completion of corrective and preventive actions. Conduct regular lab and facility inspections to identify hazards and ensure regulatory compliance. Review and approve laboratory safety plans, risk assessments, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines. Provide expert consultation and training to staff and researchers on chemical hygiene, biosafety, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Develop and maintain health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols and documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards. Work with research and operational teams to promote safety awareness and best practices. Mentor and guide junior safety personnel in technical and professional development. Stay up-to-date on emerging research safety trends, technologies, and regulatory changes, and implement best practices across your operations. May lead and/or actively participate in departmental or cross-functional initiatives.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:
Bachelor's degree in the sciences, public health, or a related field. Ph.D. preferred. Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in safety or industrial hygiene roles. Certification (or eligibility) as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is necessary. Proven experience in academic, federal, or pharmaceutical research environments. Comprehensive understanding of OSHA, EPA, NIH, and other safety regulations. Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs preferred. Familiarity with electronic safety management systems or databases is a plus.
